Odd cloud formation in North Carolina prompts talk of UFOs | Charlotte Observer

Images showing a mysterious circular gap that appeared in the clouds over a North Carolina highway have ignited a scramble for explanations on social media, including the possibility it was created by a UFO .

North Carolina TV station WBTV was the first to post a photo on Monday, with an explanation that viewer Phil Lambert of Lenoir submitted the photo taken on Old Mountain Road in Iredell County.

* * *

Not long after, photos from other people began to appear on Facebook, with some commenting — perhaps tongue-in-cheek — that the shape was not unlike the gap that might be left by a descending flying saucer ... or a cloaked USS Enterprise ( a Star Trek reference .)

Aliens, flying discs and sightings -- oh my! A short history of UFOs in America

The UAPs are just a fraction of the incursions Navy training ranges see, Navy spokesperson Joe Gradisher told CNN. Which, of course, begs the question: Are we actually alone?

In that time, Air Force personnel looked at 12,618 reported UFO sightings and said that 701 remain "unidentified."

"Since Project Blue Book was closed, nothing has happened to indicate that the Air Force ought to resume investigating UFOs," the archives said.

Academic Says UFOs Exist, But That Doesn't Mean 'Aliens' Do

A UFO is not necessarily an alien from another planet. It is simply a flying object that cannot be explained away through conventional means. Because UFOs are usually brought up only to crack jokes, however, they have been dismissed for decades.

One of the gutsiest working paper presentations I have witnessed was Alexander Wendt and Raymond Duvall presenting a draft version of " Sovereignty and the UFO ."

In that paper, eventually published in the journal Political Theory , Wendt and Duvall argued that state sovereignty as we understand it is anthropocentric, or "constituted and organized by reference to human beings alone."

Americans Skeptical of UFOs, but Say Government Knows More

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- As an internet campaign called "Storm Area 51" has nearly two million people pledging to break into a highly secure military base later this month in the hopes of uncovering possible secrets about UFOs, a recent Gallup poll finds two-thirds of Americans believe the government knows more about the subject than it has conveyed.

For decades, UFO enthusiasts have claimed the government is warehousing crashed UFOs, and possibly aliens, at Area 51, part of an Air Force base in southern Nevada. In other UFO news, the Navy recently issued new guidance for personnel to report "unexplained aerial phenomena" after a spate of unusual sightings by Navy pilots.

UFO Sightings Will Soon Peak. Don't Blame The Government

A crescent Moon and the planets Mercury and Venus over the European Southern Observatory's (ESO) ... [+] Paranal Observatory in Chile.

However, before you start to panic, know that the bright light is nothing more than a close planet coming back into view after a while behind the Sun.

It is, of course, super-bright planet Venus and–for a limited time only–it can be seen with the hardest-to-see tiny planet Mercury.

* * *

Venus has been hidden for a while observable only before dawn for much of 2019, and until recently lost in sunlight. It reached what astronomers call "superior conjunction" (when it appears to go behind the Sun from our point of view on Earth) back in mid-August, but it's only now beginning to move away from the glare of the setting Sun. The same goes for Mercury, which was hidden by the Sun's glare completely during its superior conjunction on September 4.

World UFO Day: Best places to go alien spotting | The Independent

The chances of anything coming from Mars may be a million to one, but the odds aren't that slim for the rest of the universe. On World UFO Day on 2 July, here are the best places to go extraterrestrial spotting (or, at the very least, pick up an alien keyring).

* * *

This 4 July weekend – or Independence Day, geddit? – Roswell also hosts its annual UFO Festival, with costume competitions, lectures and book signings.

Warminster, on the edge of Salisbury Plain in the English county of Wiltshire, has been a supposed hotbed of UFO activity since the 17th century. Cley Hill, a 240m Iron Age hillfort, has become an unofficial UFO observatory where spotters head, hoping for a glimpse of the pulsating lights that have characterised many previous sightings. For those lucky enough to see one, Warminster has its very own designated National Reporting Centre for UFOs.
