There's Now an Operational Radio Telescope on the Far Side of the Moon - Universe Today

The Chang'e-4 mission, the fourth installment in the Chinese Lunar Exploration Program, has made some significant achievements since it launched in December of 2018. In January of 2019, the mission lander and its Yutu 2 (Jade Rabbit 2) rover became the first robotic explorers to achieve a soft landing on the far side of the Moon. Around the same time, it became the first mission to grow plants on the Moon (with mixed results ).

In the latest development, the Netherlands-China Low Frequency Explorer (NCLE) commenced operations after a year of orbiting the Moon. This instrument was mounted on the Queqiao communications satellite and consists of three 5-meter (16.4 ft) long monopole antennas that are sensitive to radio frequencies in the 80 kHz – 80 MHz range. With this instrument now active, Chang'e-4 has now entered into the next phase of its mission.

Radio Telescope Unfurls 3 Antennas Beyond the Far Side of the Moon | Space

In a quiet orbit around the far side of the moon , three radio antennas are now outstretched, craning for whispers from a mysterious period early in the universe's history .

The devices are attached to a Chinese communications satellite, Queqiao , which has been supporting the country's moon mission, Chang'e 4 . As the equipment for an experiment dubbed the Netherlands-China Low Frequency Explorer, the antennas mark the first step toward ducking behind the moon in order to flee the eternal technological chatter of modern Earth that poses a constant challenge to radio astronomy.

'Phantom' Vest-Wearing Dummies to Fly Around the Moon | Space

WASHINGTON — "Phantom women" dummies will make a trip around the moon in 2020 or so on a special mission: to protect all astronauts from radiation.

Before this moon-bound mission takes off, however, a version of StemRad is already on board the International Space Station, thanks to a launch aboard a Northrop Grumman Cygnus cargo spacecraft in November. If all goes according to plan, astronauts on the orbiting laboratory will perform ergonomics tests with StemRad late this year or in early 2020. This testing will make sure that the 57-lb. (26 kilograms) vest will not interfere with astronauts' day-to-day activities.

Russia Wants to Build an Observatory on the Moon

Russia has long planned on setting up a base on the Moon, a goal it shares with China and the U.S. Now, the state media agency TASS says that the outpost will include a series of telescopes to help the country better track any space rock hazards.

Russia has been scanning for asteroids that come in close proximity to Earth since 2016, according to TASS . The lunar outpost is supposed to supplement that existing system by extending its reach to deep space.

Halfway through his presidency, Moon must rethink his inter-Korean strategy | NK News

Views expressed in Opinion articles are exclusively the authors' own and do not represent the views of NK News.

It seems like only yesterday that South Korean President Moon Jae-in was shortlisted for TIME magazine's person of the year . Having arguably averted a nuclear crisis on the Korean peninsula, few would have disputed the former human rights lawyer's role as regional peacemaker.

Adding to problems at home, a trade war with Japan and sidelining from U.S.-DPRK talks mean that South Korea is becoming increasingly isolated and the embattled Democratic Party leader is teetering on the brink of lame duck status.
