5 interesting facts about the moon | Fox News

The moon has been the Earth's companion in the Solar System for almost five billion years. It is the only place beyond Earth where humans have set foot.

The brightest and largest object in our night sky, the moon makes Earth a more livable planet by moderating our home planet's wobble on its axis, leading to a relatively stable climate .

Earth's only natural satellite is simply called "the moon" because people didn't know other moons existed until Italian astronomer Galileo Galilei discovered four moons orbiting Jupiter in 1610.

Gateway is removed from NASA's 'critical path' to the moon, simplifying the 2024 goal | Space

NASA has removed the Lunar Gateway from its "critical path" to return humans to the moon by 2024, according to a SpaceNews report . But the agency has assured that it isn't casting aside its plan for a moon-orbiting space station.

With new changes to the agency's plan to return astronauts to the moon with the Artemis program , NASA has removed the Gateway, a mini-space station that would facilitate crewed lunar landings, from its plan in favor of simpler solutions, Doug Loverro, the head of NASA's human spaceflight directorate, said Friday (March 13) at a meeting of the NASA Advisory Council's Science Committee, SpaceNews reported .

How to see Venus shining with the moon tonight | Space

Tonight (Feb. 27), as darkness is falling, be sure to look toward the west-southwest sky to spot another beautiful celestial tableau formed by a lovely crescent moon and the brilliant planet Venus .

Venus will appear to hover far to the right of the moon. The objects will be separated by about 6.5 degrees. The width of your clenched fist held at arm's length measures roughly 10 degrees, so, Venus and the moon will appear a bit more than a half fist apart.

Chinese moon rover peers beneath surface of mysterious lunar far side | Space

The Chang'e 4 spacecraft touched down on the floor of the 115-mile-wide (186 kilometers) Von Kármán Crater on Jan. 2, 2019, becoming the first probe ever to ace a soft landing on the moon's mysterious far side, which forever points away from Earth.

A rover called Yutu 2 ("Jade Rabbit 2") rolled off the stationary Chang'e 4 lander just hours after touchdown. These two solar-powered craft have now been taking the measure of their exotic surroundings for more than a year with a variety of science gear, giving us unprecedented views of the lunar far side's surface .

China's Chang'e 4 lander and rover complete 15th lunar day on moon's far side | Space

The lander and Yutu 2 rover, which have now driven a total of 1,312 feet (just under 400 meters) on the lunar surface, powered down on March 1, hours ahead of sunset over their position in Von Kármán crater .

All of the science instruments on both spacecraft are in good condition, according to the China Lunar Exploration Program (CLEP). One of the instruments, Yutu 2's ground-penetrating radar, last week provided a first look below the surface of the moon's far side.
