Mines across the United States churn out all kinds of minerals, from potash to iron to gold . But the ground around a mine in southern Montana contains a mineral that is a bit more valuable—at least to the scientists who use it to study the Moon.
On August 10, 2018, Operational Land Imager (OLI) on Landsat 8 acquired this image showing part of the Stillwater Complex south of Nye, Montana. The group of rocks spans about 30 miles (50 kilometers) of the Beartooth Mountain Range, and is mined primarily for its chromium and platinum-group metals.

Like I Was Sayin’: The strange story of Lil’ Moon, our tiny second
Here’s how crazy 2020 is: It’s May and the fact that we had a small moon circle the Earth and then depart isn’t the wackiest story of the year.
You read that correctly: A second moon orbited Earth, then left. Now it’s just a footnote, because of a worldwide pandemic.

Astronomers announced the presence of a miniature moon (which we’ll call Lil’ Moon) in February, informing us that Lil’ Moon (also called 2020 CD3) had circled Earth for at least a year before they discovered it.
Fly Him to the Moon. Or at Least, Fly Him Home. - The New York Times
Ryan Driscoll is the sort of celebrity unique to luxury cruise lines. A singer and entertainer , dapper and dandy, he plays the big room at night, crooning like Sinatra and Darin. He spends days schmoozing by the pool and strolling the decks, handing out smiles and leaving behind swoons. He belts out arias at sunset. If you are lucky, he is assigned to your table for dinner.
The entire ship is his stage. The moment he leaves his cabin, he is "on" — suit crisped, face shaved, hair coiffed, smile illuminated.

This Thursday sees the rise of the "Super Flower Moon," the fourth and final so-called supermoon of the year.
Exactly how special is the "Super Flower Moon?" Given that there have been three overly large full moons in a row so far in 2020, you could be forgiven for thinking that the "Super Flower Moon" is not particularly special.
Entire surface of the Moon mapped for the first time - BBC Science Focus Magazine
These colourful maps showing the craggy surface of the Moon in exhaustive detail were put together following a mammoth effort by researchers from the US Geological Survey, NASA, and the Lunar Planetary Institute. It is the first time the entire lunar surface has been completely mapped and uniformly classified by scientists.
The lunar map, dubbed the "Unified Geologic Map of the Moon," will now serve as the definitive blueprint of the Moon's surface geology for all future human missions to the Moon and will provide an invaluable for scientists studying the 4.5 billion-year-old history of the planet Earth's nearest neighbour.
