How much space does a black hole take up? | Astronomy.com

The most massive supermassive black hole discovered to date lies within the Abell 85 galaxy cluster. At the heart of this cluster is the galaxy Holm 15A, home to an estimated 2 trillion solar masses. The very center of this galaxy is almost as large as the Large Magellanic Cloud, which has a radius of 7,000 light-years. 

700 million light-years from Earth, this cluster was twice the distance of any previous black hole measurement when the Ludwig-Maximilians-University’s USM Wendelstein Observatory and the European Southern Observatory’s Very Large Telescope began collecting data. They found that the black hole at the center of Holm 15A clocks in at colossal 40 billion solar masses, or roughly two-thirds the mass of all the stars in the Milky Way.

Clearing up a supermassive (black hole) confusion

The interpretation of the second signature has since come under scrutiny. Using higher-resolution data from the Flemish-funded Mercator Telescope on the island of La Palma (Spain), the KU Leuven team ran several simulations and concluded that the original interpretation of the system was in fact incorrect.

"As we examined the available data more carefully, we began to realize that something didn't seem quite right" explains Michael Abdul-Masih. "The second signature did not behave as we expected it to. This is when I realized that maybe this second signature is not moving at all, but only appears to do so because of the movement of the star." "It is a little like the fake impression of moving you get while sitting in a train and the train next to you starts moving while you are not.

Hubble Finds "Missing Link" Black Hole Tearing Apart a Star That Passed Too Close [Video]

This artist’s concept depicts a cosmic homicide in action. A wayward star is being shredded by the intense gravitational pull of a black hole that contains tens of thousands of solar masses. The stellar remains are forming an accretion disk around the black hole. Flares of X-ray light from the super-heated gas disk alerted astronomers to the black hole’s location; otherwise it lurked unknown in the dark.


Astronomers have identified a black hole of an elusive class known as “intermediate-mass,” which betrayed its existence by tearing apart a wayward star that passed too close. This exciting discovery opens the door to the possibility of many more lurking undetected in the dark, waiting to be given away by a star passing too close.
