Full moon this week is the last supermoon in 2020 - CNN

(CNN) The final supermoon of the year, rounding out a trio of spring supermoons that began in March, will occur during May's full moon. The big, bright moon will appear fullest on the morning of May 7 at 6:45 a.m. ET, according to NASA .

Using data collected by Japan’s Kaguya lunar orbiter over a year and a half, Shoichiro Yokota at Osaka University in Japan and his colleagues have discovered that the moon emits carbon ions across almost its entire surface.

Some areas, such as the moon's large basaltic plains, emit more carbon ions than other regions, such as the highlands. These plains are made of younger material, and as such emit more carbon because they have been exposed to space for a shorter period of time, says Yokota. Older regions have been exposed to more space weathering, and so have lost much of their carbon already.

Almost a millennium ago, a major upheaval occurred in Earth's atmosphere: a giant cloud of sulphur-rich particles flowed throughout the stratosphere, turning skies dark for months or even years, before ultimately falling down to Earth.

We know this event happened because researchers have drilled and analysed ice cores - samples taken from deep within ice sheets or glaciers, which have trapped sulphur aerosols produced by volcanic eruptions reaching the stratosphere and settling back on the surface.

Carbon Emissions Detected From The Moon Could Force a Major Rethink of Lunar Origins

A spacecraft orbiting the Moon has detected something really peculiar. Our satellite is emitting a steady stream of carbon ions from almost its entire surface, contrary to the long-standing thinking that the Moon is depleted of carbon and other volatile elements.

In fact, it seems that carbon has been there since the Moon's formation, or very shortly after, 4.5 billion years or so ago. This means that the details of the impact theory of the Moon's formation - which largely relies on a lack of volatiles - may need to be reconsidered.

Pandemic hobbies take many forms: For some it's knitting, for others it's baking truckloads of bread. For Petr Soural, it's designing groovy lunar calendars.

About six months ago, Soural constructed a " Circular Graphic Ephemeris " tool, which shows the evolving positions of the planets as well as the moon. Roughly speaking, an ephemeris is an accounting of an orbiting object's position and speed over time.

"Most of the planets have funny annual movements, but I noticed that the moon's path is very smooth, cyclical and harmonic," Soural said.

Trump administration drafts pact for mining on the moon | Science | The Guardian

The Artemis Accords, named after the Nasa's new Artemis moon program, propose "safety zones" that would surround future moon bases to prevent damage or interference from rival countries or companies operating in close proximity.

The pact also aims to provide a framework under international law for companies to own the resources they mine, the sources said.

In the coming weeks, US officials plan to formally negotiate the accords with space partners such as Canada, Japan, and European countries, as well as the United Arab Emirates, opening talks with countries the Trump administration sees as having "like-minded" interests in lunar mining.

This morning will be a little breezy with a more noticeable offshore flow developing over the course of the day. Valley temperatures will range from the upper 30s to low 40s. The normal low temperature for early May is 48°. The wind-sheltered spots will prove to be the coldest and have the best chance for patchy fog. Otherwise, a little breeze creates too much mixing and helps prevent the formation of fog.

White House drafting 'Artemis Accords' for moon mining, report says - CNET

US officials plan to negotiate the Artemis Accords with space partners like Canada, Japan, European countries and the United Arab Emirates, Reuters reported. Though Russia is a major partner with NASA on the International Space Station, it will not be an early partner in the accords.
