Astronomers Give Asteroid Moon a New Name Before NASA Hits It With a Spacecraft - ExtremeTech

Astronomers discovered Didymos in 1996 not knowing that it would end up being the perfect target to test NASA’s asteroid redirect technology. Didymos passed close to Earth in 2003, revealing the existence of a small natural satellite in orbit. Didymos itself is less than a kilometer across, but its satellite is only about 160 meters in diameter. After discovering the moonlet, astronomers renamed the object Didymos, which is Greek for twin.

DART is a kinetic impactor mission — it’s going to crash into Didymos B at high speed. This is an ideal way to test the effect of an impact because we can observe changes in its orbit around Didymos. That makes the asteroidal moon an important object, and it wouldn’t do to keep calling it Didymos B.

Protecting Earth from asteroid impact with a tethered diversion

Each potential PHA impact mitigation method carries with it its own set of benefits and risks. A considerable risk associated with 'high-impact' mitigation techniques, such as the detonation of explosives at the surface of the PHA, is fragmentation. This makes methods which gradually alter the orbit of a PHA, and thus prevent the break up of such an object, look like a less risky prospect.

Using the asteroid Bennu as a test subject, the team used computer simulations to calculate the dynamics of such a tether system for a variety of different initial conditions, concluding that it would be feasible for use as a planetary defense system. The team also suggest that the system could be of use in both the study and potential mining of NEOs and other asteroids.

An asteroid is a minor planet that did not evolve fully when the Solar System was born. There are millions of asteroids in existence that orbit the Sun, though most are in the main asteroid belt, a region between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter. They are not of the same size and shape because they are formed in different locations at different distances from the sun. They are made up of different kinds of rocks, but some contain clay or metal, such as nickel and iron.

Asteroid that is three times bigger than the Big Ben shot past the Earth at a speed of 46,400

According to a report by Express UK that cited NASA, the asteroid measures somewhere between 140 metres and 310 metres, which means that it is three times bigger than the 96-metre tall Big Ben.

The report mentions that the asteroid is travelling at a speed of 46,400 kmph and passed by at a distance of 3.76 million kilometres. This makes it a Near-Earth Object.

NASA warns about 'potentially dangerous' asteroid approaching Earth - Science & Space - TASS

MOSCOW, June 2. /TASS/. An asteroid, classified as "potentially dangerous" would approach Earth on June 6, NASA says on its website.

According to the space agency, the diameter of the 163348 (2002 NN4) asteroid is between 250 and 570 meters, and it will dash past our planet at a distance of 5.1 million kilometers with a speed of 11.1 km/s.

Currently, the astronomers have discovered over 8,000 asteroids of over 140 meters in diameter in the near-earth space, or within the radius of 7 million km. According to NASA experts, such celestial bodies are classified as "potentially dangerous." The total number of large asteroids in the near-earth space might reach 25,000, according to Space.com.

Ancient micrometeoroids carried specks of stardust, water to asteroid 4 Vesta: Researchers

The formation of our solar system was a messy affair. Most of the material that existed before its formation -- material formed around other, long-dead stars -- was vaporized, then recondensed into new materials. But some grains of that material, formed before the sun's birth, still persist.

These "stardust" grains arrived on Earth inside primitive meteorites. New Washington University in St. Louis research led by Nan Liu, an assistant research professor in physics and the Laboratory for Space Sciences in Arts & Sciences, shows that stardust was also delivered to another planet-like body in the solar system, asteroid 4 Vesta, by micrometeoroids that also carried water.

On asteroid Bennu, NASA discovers a clue about the formation of the solar system

On September 8, 2016, NASA launched a small spacecraft. Its mission: Snag a piece of a flying asteroid and return it back to Earth.

And so OSIRIS-REx has been orbiting asteroid Bennu (it arrived near the 'roid on December, 2018). And it has been making close flybys of the rocky object and learning new and surprising information about asteroids with each pass.

Recently released images by OSIRIS-REx revealed yet another discovery, showing cracks in the rocks on asteroid Bennu, which appear to have been caused by the Sun. This discovery is a huge deal to scientists because it can help them identify the age of asteroids, and these rocky bodies are believed to have formed around the same time as the Solar System.
