For the first time in nearly a decade, two American astronauts were recently launched into orbit from Cape Canaveral, Florida. Doug Hurley and Bob Behnken were on a SpaceX vehicle, which successfully docked with the International Space Station after spending 19 hours orbiting around Earth. They joined three other astronauts already on the station and will remain for up to four months to work and research.
I remember watching rocket blastoffs on a black and white TV in the 1960s, culminating with Neil Armstrong walking on the moon in July, 1969. The 1960s were a huge decade for space exploration. Space travel was unbelievably inspiring.

Geology chair, member of two active space missions, sees great potential in historic SpaceX
When Dr. Harold C. Connolly Jr. viewed the historic SpaceX rocket launch May 30, he did so with greater focus than most of the millions watching around the world, and it brought tears to his eyes.
Connolly, founding chair and professor of Rowan University’s Department of Geology in the School of Earth & Environment , is a co-investigator and Mission Sample Scientist on NASA’s asteroid sample return mission, OSIRIS-REx . He is also co-investigator with the Japanese space agency JAXA’s asteroid sample return mission, Hayabusa2 , and a founding member of the Hayabusa2/OSIRIS-REx integration team.

KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, Fla. — The United States opened a new era of human space travel on Saturday as a private company for the first time launched astronauts into orbit, nearly a decade after the government retired the storied space shuttle program in the aftermath of national tragedy.
We can learn from ingenuity of space travel to solve problems on Earth | New Scientist
“CONGRATULATIONS to America – this has been an amazing two days,” NASA administrator Jim Bridenstine said on 31 May, as two astronauts arrived on the International Space Station. They had launched the day before, carried into orbit by a SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule.
The launch was a major milestone for US space flight (see NASA and SpaceX launch astronauts into new era of private spaceflight ), but many people in the US weren’t in the mood for either congratulations or celebrations. The evening after Bridenstine’s remarks, nationwide protests against police brutality and racism continued in the …

Orbital liberties - SpaceX is making human space travel a routine form of commerce | Leaders |
A T AN ALTITUDE of 400km, with both vessels travelling at 7.7km a second, the Crew Dragon capsule took orbital advantage of a freedom denied to the socially distanced on Earth to come within two metres of the International Space Station. After a final 20 seconds of stately approach the Endeavour 's capture ring made contact with the station's docking adaptor. The short voyage's simple, straightforward end belied its significance.
In May 2012 SpaceX, a Californian firm founded by Elon Musk, started using its spacecraft to make cargo deliveries to the space station built by America, Russia, Europe, Japan and Canada. (They started being used to bring the station's rubbish back down a week later.) The mission it launched on May 30th, though, used a completely revamped version of the firm's Dragon capsule to carry up something much more precious: two astronauts, Robert Behnken and Douglas Hurley.
Elon Musk Tells SpaceX To Focus On Mars-Bound Starship Spacecraft 'Dramatically And Immediately'
Starship is SpaceX's next human spaceflight endeavour after Crew Dragon. The spacecraft, which is being built and tested at one of the company's sites in Boca Chica, Texas, is designed to carry more than 100 people per flight to destinations such as the Moon and Mars.
SpaceX began development of Starship while it was already under contract with NASA for the Crew Dragon spacecraft. Beginning in 2011, SpaceX has been funded to develop the smaller crew capsule, which can take up to seven people into space.

PANAMA CITY, Fla. (WMBB) — Someday you may be able to pick up your smartphone and book a trip to the moon.
On May 30, astronauts, Bob Behnken and Doug Hurley, successfully launched into outer space. The mission marks the first successful launch for SpaceX, Elon Musk’s company, with crew on board, and the first time in over a decade humans have reached orbit after launching from US Soil.
John Posey, NASA lead engineer for Crew Dragon said the recent SpaceX launch, that he worked on, has paved the way to making this dream a reality.
