How to spot 5 planets and the crescent moon without a telescope this weekend -

Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn, as well as the moon, will be close enough and bright enough to spot with the naked eye on Sunday, NASA said .

To see the show, you'll want to set an early alarm. You'll be able to spot the five planets plus the moon about 45 minutes before sunrise if you have a clear view of the horizon, according to astronomer Dr. Jeffrey Hunt .

Four of the five planets will appear like extremely bright stars. Venus will be visible low in the east-northeast, Mars in the south-southeast, and Jupiter and Saturn in the west-southwest, the Griffith Observatory  said.

Core of a gas planet seen for the first time - BBC News

It could be the core of a gas world like Jupiter, offering an unprecedented glimpse inside one of these giant planets.

Giant planets like Jupiter and Saturn have a solid planetary core beneath a thick envelope of hydrogen and helium gas.

* * *

Lead author David Armstrong, from Warwick University, and colleagues had been running a programme to detect exposed planetary cores in data from the Tess space telescope.

"We followed it up with an instrument called the Harps spectrograph in Chile, which we used to measure the masses of these candidates. This one came out as being exceptionally massive - much more than we expected really. That's when we started to look into what could have caused that."

Planetary Scientist Visualize How Earth and Other Planets Don't Orbit the Sun

A scientist from the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency has visualized planets orbiting the 'barycenter'.

What had been taught to us in elementary school wasn't completely correct: a little further information was missing. The Earth does not in fact orbit the Sun,  but the Sun orbits the gravity center of the Solar System along with all the other planets. The adscititious detail, which had provided a bigger picture for scientists to make discoveries, has been visualized.

This Is The First Image Of Planets Circling A Star Like Our Sun

This is the first time astronomers have imaged more than one planet orbiting a star similar to the ... [+] Sun.

Can you imagine what our giant solar system planets look like from far, far away? This picture gives a tantalizing hint.

What you see here is an image of a solar system about 300 light-years from us, called TYC 8998-760-1. The star is just like our sun, but a lot younger — only 17 million years old, which is a baby star compared to our sun's venerable age of 4.5 billion years.

Planetary alignment? Increase in volcanoes? | Earth | EarthSky

The book called “The Jupiter Effect” suggested an alignment of planets in 1982 would cause earthly catastrophes, including a great earthquake on California’s San Andreas Fault. There’s another planetary alignment, of sorts, going on now. Will it cause volcanic eruptions? Charts, and info, from Guy Ottewell.

View larger . | In this space view, from a distance of 6 astronomical units (sun-Earth distances) from the sun – at latitude 15 degrees north of the ecliptic plane and longitude 120 degrees – the courses of the planets are shown for the month of July 2020. There are sightlines to Uranus and Neptune because they are in a different direction. Chart via Guy Ottewell’s blog .

A fan-generated Washington Football Team name that's out of this world: The UFOs | NBC Sports

Though they will be known as the Washington Football team for the upcoming season, the discussion around what the local NFL franchise will eventually change its name to rages on.

Some want it to relate to the history of the franchise without the explicit Native American imagery. The Washington Warriors or Redspears  are examples there. Others are hoping for a connection specific to Washington D.C. itself. The Potomacs  would work well in that realm. A vocal faction - on social media anyway - is in support of the Washington Red Wolves , a unique brand that features limitless logo and uniform ideas.

Opinion | The footage of UFOs doesn't mean what you think | Opinion | breezejmu.org

On April 27, the U.S. Department of Defense officially released three videos of UFOs recorded by U.S. Navy pilots along with a statement. This quickly became some of the biggest news of 2020, besides the pandemic.

The UFO footage accumulated a great amount of excitement in people all over the internet. Some went as far as to make claims on Twitter such as "a few days ago the US Navy literally confirmed aliens exist." #Aliensexist was trending on twitter and an uncountable amount of articles were written about the matter.

What were those strange lights in the night sky over Alamogordo?

Those outside enjoying the night sky on Thursday may have seen a string of lights moving across the sky mostly in a line.

That line of moving lights lasted for at least half an hour and scattered out of the line toward the end of their visibility.

Alamogordo residents who saw the strange lights may have wondered whether to expect a visit from little green men in flying saucers.

Hackers Are Targeting the Remote Workers Who Keep Your Lights On

In July alone, hackers took over the twitter accounts of U.S. politicians, stole terrabytes of coronavirus research and even infiltrated the U.K.’s Premier League soccer clubs. Can they cut off your electricity, too?

Even before the pandemic, hackers succeeded in infiltrating some energy infrastructure. In 2016, an Iran-based hacker gained remote access to an electric dam in New York for weeks. Earlier this year, ransomware shut down a natural gas facility for two days.

China-Backed Hackers ‘Targeted’ COVID-19 Vaccine Firm Moderna, Reuters Reports

Last week, the U.S. Justice Department made public an indictment of two Chinese nationals accused of spying on the United States, including three unnamed U.S.-based targets involved in medical research to fight the novel coronavirus.

The indictment said the Chinese hackers “conducted reconnaissance” against the computer network of a Massachusetts biotech firm known to be working on a coronavirus vaccine in January.

Moderna, which is based in Massachusetts and announced its COVID-19 vaccine candidate in January, confirmed to Reuters that the company had been in contact with the FBI and was made aware of the suspected “information reconnaissance activities” by the hacking group mentioned in last week’s indictment.

Hackers Have Been Using Dogecoin to Deploy Malware for 6 Months & No One Noticed

A new study indicates that hackers are actively relying on the Dogecoin ( DOGE ) blockchain to expand a malware payload named "Doki."

UFO sighting Debryshire | UFOs for real?

The highly-engrossing topic of UFOs has been around for decades. And with each passing year, it has only gained popularity.

With the advent of the internet in the 90s and social media in the mid-2000s, theories about UFOs, sightings, and pictures received a boost as they were made accessible for the public. Now, new UFO pictures, videos and theories doesn’t surface on the internet almost every month. However, not all claims and theories are thought-provoking. Some are actually downright laughable.

History's Most Infamous UFO Sightings of the Modern Era - HISTORY

UFOs aren’t new. Indeed, humans have been describing unidentified flying objects for millennia, with depictions of disk-like objects and unusual atmospheric objects found in the art and literature of ancient civilizations from the Sumerians and the Egyptians to the Greeks and Romans.

But the modern era of UFOs took off in the middle of the 20th century, right around the time rockets and high-tech aircraft were being devised, often in secret. Coincidence? Paranoia? Perhaps. In any event, these seven UFO sightings gained a lot of attention—and raised a lot of eyebrows.

Ford to use Boston Dynamics’ dog-like robots to map their manufacturing facilities –

There are a few benefits that Ford hopes to realize by employing the Spot robots in place of humans to map the facility: First, they should save a considerable amount of time, as they replace a time-intensive process of setting up a tripod with a laser scanner at various points throughout the facility and spending a while at each location manually capturing the environment.

The robot dogs are also equipped with five cameras as well as laser scanners, and can operate for up to two hours traveling at around 3 mph continuously. The data they collect can then be synthesized for a more complete overall picture, and because of their small size and nimble navigation capabilities, they can map areas of the plant that aren’t necessarily reachable by people attempting to do the same job.

Alabama combats isolated seniors' loneliness with robots pets

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WSFA) - The Alabama Department of Senior Services has been working on ways to comfort the state's elderly who remain isolated in closed off senior centers.

One of those projects is a statewide robotic pet program that pairs isolated seniors with a robotic cat or dog. The programmed pooches and kitties are meant to help them combat loneliness.

"It's beyond dispute that social isolation is deadly for seniors," said ADSS Commissioner Jean Brown. "Studies have shown it's worse than smoking 15 cigarettes a day, and we know beyond a doubt social isolation can lead to not only physical decline but to mental decline."

Editorial: Who wouldn't want to go to Mars these days? - Los Angeles Times

Who hasn't thought that at some point in the past four months, as we hunkered down in our homes, brooding and restless but with no place to go? The pandemic shuttered our offices and made the idea of venturing anywhere more ambitious than a grocery store seem like a perilous journey. Any trip that required a flight or a stroll among the masses — even masked — seemed an unreasonable risk.

Suddenly a planet that is forbidding — with its frigid minus-80 degree temperature and thin, unbreathable atmosphere — seems more inviting than our pandemic-wracked Earth. And while our entire planet put their plans on hold, this was one trip that could not be postponed. The orbits of Earth and Mars align only once every 26 months. If scientists miss their shot this time, they will have to wait two years before trying again.

NASA Just Launched Its New Perseverance Rover to Mars | WIRED

On Thursday morning, NASA launched its new Mars rover, Perseverance, on a six-month journey to the Red Planet. The car-sized rover was boosted into space atop a United Launch Alliance Atlas V rocket that departed from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. It's the third and final Mars mission to depart Earth this summer; earlier in July, China and the United Arab Emirates also launched their first Martian explorers.

Perseverance will enter the tenuous Martian atmosphere going more than 10,000 miles per hour, which means that as it slices through the air it will experience temperatures of nearly 4,000 degrees Fahrenheit. "The heat shield really takes the brunt of hitting the atmosphere," says Tice of the lander's protective structure.

A Helicopter Ride Over Mars? NASA's About to Give It a Shot | WIRED

"I see it as kind of a Wright brothers moment on another planet," says Bob Balaram, the chief engineer for the Mars helicopter project at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory. "It's a high-risk, high-reward mission that could enable us to go to lots of places we haven't been able to go before."

Satellites are good at getting a global understanding of a planet, and the rovers are great at exploring a relatively small amount of terrain in minute detail. For everything in between, it helps to have an airborne system. A rover can only cover a few dozen kilometers over the course of several years, but future extraterrestrial drones could easily cover that in a day.

Saddle up for a ride through the cosmos, partner, Space Force has horses | News | dothaneagle.com

The military's newest and most continually bewildering service branch shared a video last week welcoming the addition of a military working horse — a mustang named Ghost — to the ranks of the 30th Space Wing.

The 5-year-old horse, acquired through the Bureau of Land Management, is part of a team at California's Vandenberg Air Force Base that carries out tasks ranging from conservation efforts to the enforcement of hunting and fishing laws.

And while no one can fault the service members involved for landing perhaps the most enjoyable gig in the entire U.S. military, the notion that these tasks A) are even performed by a military unit, and B) once fell under the command of the U.S. Air Force remains perplexing.

It’s difficult, if not impossible, to say what these actually are, however, without context. What happened before and after these video snippets? Were there any simultaneous observations from other instruments, or sightings by pilots?

FARMINGTON — Farmington has reached the 70th anniversary of one of the more sensational events in its history this week, but it's a safe bet to say few residents will pay much attention to that milestone – or even be aware of it.

From March 16 to March 18 in 1950, the city experienced a mass UFO sighting, with some reports indicating "hundreds" of residents saw strange objects in the sky in broad daylight over the three-day period.
