Astronomers construct and play with a variety of mathematical models, and one popular model looks at how likely it is that civilizations on different planets could end up contacting each other.
Scientists have proposed various simulations and predictions, and now a Jesuit astronomer and former director of the Vatican Observatory has co-authored a study offering a new set of results.
The so-called Fermi paradox led Frank Drake to formulate what became known as the Drake equation — a series of factors used for quantifying "the number of civilizations from whom we might receive an electromagnetic signal," the new study said.

Already having proposed enough conjecture to have them put away in pink padded rooms, the theorists go on to say the little green people with big heads are going through a process known as aestivating (like hibernation but sleeping till it’s colder as opposed to warmer like with bears and bees.)
Earth May Have Been Wet Since the Beginning
A new study finds that Earth's water may have come from materials that were present in the inner solar system at the time the planet formed—instead of far-reaching comets or asteroids delivering such water. The findings published Aug. 28 in Science suggest that Earth may have always been wet.
Researchers from the Centre de Recherches Petrographiques et Geochimiques (CRPG, CNRS/Universite de Lorraine) in Nancy, France, including one who is now a postdoctoral fellow at Washington University in St. Louis, determined that a type of meteorite called an enstatite chondrite contains sufficient hydrogen to deliver at least three times the amount of water contained in the Earth's oceans, and probably much more.
