Microsoft just made it harder for hackers to attack your PC

Even though cybersecurity news has been pretty dark for the past several months, there are still positive developments brewing beneath the surface. Case in point, Microsoft has quietly added a new update to Windows 10 that prevents hackers from disabling Microsoft Defender through the system registry. Here's how you can take advantage of this safeguard.

The Windows registry is a vital part of the operating system — as well as an easy way for hackers with access to your system to make changes and ruin your computer.

North Korean Hacking Group Attacks Israeli Defense Industry - The New York Times

The Defense Ministry said the attack was deflected "in real time" and that there was no "harm or disruption" to its computer systems.

However, security researchers at ClearSky, the international cybersecurity firm that first exposed the attack, said the North Korean hackers penetrated the computer systems and were likely to have stolen a large amount of classified data. Israeli officials fear the data could be shared with North Korea's ally, Iran.

The episode adds Israel to the list of countries and companies that have been targeted by North Korea 's hacking unit, known to private security analysts as the Lazarus Group. American and Israeli officials have said the Lazarus Group, also known as Hidden Cobra, is backed by Pyongyang.

University of Utah Pays Ransomware Hackers Despite Having Backups | PCMag

On Thursday, the University of Utah revealed it paid $457,059 to a ransomware gang, despite successfully restoring the school’s IT systems following the attack.

The university decided to give in because the hackers also stole some private data from the school, which they apparently threatened to leak. “After careful consideration, the university decided to work with its cyber insurance provider to pay a fee to the ransomware attacker. This was done as a proactive and preventive step to ensure information was not released on the internet,” the school wrote in the announcement.
