Every surface looms like a germ-covered threat, you hold your breath when people pass, and you go to great lengths to ensure you don't get too close to fellow shoppers — exchanging pointed, disapproving glances the second someone disregards the one-way aisle arrow.

Theresa Arevalo was in high school when she first tried finishing drywall at her brother's construction company. "It's a fine art," she says of mudding—applying and smoothing drywall. "Like frosting a cake, you have to give the illusion that the wall is flat."
The robot has been deployed, under Arevalo's supervision, at several construction sites in recent months, including the new Harvey Milk Terminal at San Francisco International Airport and an office building connected to the Chase Center arena in San Francisco.

Manufacturing is one of the sectors of greatest interest on that front, as a business that can't really afford to go on hiatus. That positions Rapid Robotics fairly well in the field. There are, of course, countless companies vying for a space in the massive industry.
Rapid's primary value prop is in the training category. Getting robotics up and running in a factory can by an expensive and time-intensive process. The startup believes it has a unique offering with pre-programmed robotics that don't require the same sort of training — and more or less work out to the box. On-board AI, meanwhile, assures that they'll continue learning on the job, after they're up and running.
