News | 7 Things to Know About the NASA Rover About to Land on Mars

With only about 50 million miles (80 million kilometers) left to go in its 293-million-mile (471-million-kilometer) journey, NASA's Mars 2020 Perseverance rover is nearing its new planetary home. The spacecraft has begun its approach to the Red Planet and in 43 days, on Feb. 18, 2021, Perseverance will blaze through Mars' atmosphere at about 12,100 mph (19,500 kph), touching down gently on the surface about seven minutes later.

"We're working on our last adjustments to put Perseverance in perfect position to land in one of the most interesting places on Mars," said Fernando Abilleira, deputy mission manager at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California. "The team can't wait to put these wheels in some Martian dirt."

NASA Releases Stunning New Photos of Mars' 'Grand Canyon' | Travel + Leisure

See the incredible new images of Valles Marineris, said to be the largest canyon in the solar system.

The Grand Canyon has some new competition — at least when it comes to grounded travelers gawking at gorgeous images from afar.

NASA just released several new images from its Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter to give wanderlust-afflicted earthlings the clearest glimpse of the far-flung planet's sprawling Valles Marineris canyon. The Valles Marineris canyon stretches for about 2,500 miles — about the distance from New York to San Francisco. It is an estimated 125 miles wide and approximately seven miles deep, putting it on par with the depths of the Earth's oceans.

World's richest person Elon Musk to dedicate wealth to Mars colony - Business Insider

"In fact, I'll have basically almost no possessions with a monetary value, apart from the stock in the companies," Musk told him. "If things are intense at work, I like just sleeping in the factory or the office. And I obviously need a place if my kids are there. So, I'll just rent a place or something."

"I think it is important for humanity to become a spacefaring civilization and a multiplanet species. And it's going to take a lot of resources to build a city on Mars," Musk said. "I want to be able to contribute as much as possible to the city on Mars. That means just a lot of capital."

6 essential facts about Perseverance's trailblazing Mars mission

In July 2020 , a robotic astrobiologist began a journey to a distant planet. NASA's Perseverance rover is currently en route to Mars — set to land on the Red Planet by February 2021 .

Here is how the robot will go about its 687-day mission on Mars, the equivalent of one Martian year.

Perseverance isn't venturing to Mars on its own. The Ingenuity helicopter will hitch a ride with the rover, allowing NASA to test out its ability to fly a helicopter on a planet other than Earth for the first time. After it detaches itself from the rover, Ingenuity will fly solo in a series of test flights.

Making methane on Mars | UCI News | UCI

Among the many challenges with a Mars voyage, one of the most pressing is: How can you get enough fuel for the spacecraft to fly back to Earth?

* * *

He and his team have discovered a more efficient way of creating methane-based rocket fuel theoretically on the surface of Mars, which can make the return trip all more feasible.

"Lots of engineering and research is needed before this can be fully implemented. But the results are very promising," says UCI's Houlin Xin. UCI
