A technique to track Earth’s subtle movements with orbiting radars is heating up | Science | AAAS

When you imagine satellite imagery, you probably picture crisp photos of Earth taken from orbit. But another technology used to image the planet, synthetic aperture radar (SAR), is heating up, following a surge in public and private satellite launches. SAR satellites use radars, not cameras, to take snapshots of Earth.

The star is Gliese 486, a red dwarf only 24 light-years away. The exoplanet is called Gliese 486b. It does appear to retain its atmosphere, despite its close orbit around its star.

Chinese astronauts training for space station crewed flights

The station's core module, christened Tianhe, could be launched as soon as next month, according to the China National Space Administration and foreign observers. The massive Long March-5B Y2 rocket and its payload were moved into place last month at the Wenchang Spacecraft Launch Site in tropical Hainan province for assembly and testing.

United Arab Emirates spacecraft orbits Mars in historic interplanetary mission

The United Arab Emirates' Hope probe entered Mars's orbit on February 9, making it the first Arab interplanetary probe.

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) - A spacecraft from the United Arab Emirates swung into orbit around Mars on Tuesday in a triumph for the Arab world’s first interplanetary mission.

Ground controllers at the UAE’s space center in Dubai rose to their feet and broke into applause when word came that the craft, called Amal, Arabic for Hope, had reached the end of its seven-month, 300-million-mile journey and had begun circling the red planet, where it will gather data on Mars’ atmosphere.

China's Tianwen-1 Mars mission adjusts orbit to prepare for a Red Planet landing | Space

China's Tianwen-1 spacecraft now orbiting Mars is slated to perform systematic checks of onboard equipment after adjusting its orbit in preparations for the country's first Martian landing attempt later this year.

The Tianwen-1 orbiter used its 3,000-newton engine on Feb. 15 to place itself into a polar orbit around the Red Planet. Tipping the scales at 5 metric tons, Tianwen-1 — consisting of an orbiter, lander and rover — will perform several more orbital adjustments before placing itself into a parking orbit from which the orbiter will perform an initial survey of candidate landing areas.

MAROON-X embarks on its exoplanet quest | EurekAlert! Science News

Astronomers using the recently installed instrument MAROON-X on Gemini North have determined the mass of a transiting exoplanet orbiting the nearby star Gliese 486. As well as putting the innovative new instrument through its paces, this result, when combined with data from the TESS satellite, precisely measures key properties of a rocky planet that is ideal for follow-up observations with the next generation of ground- and space-based telescopes.

Mount Etna's fiery eruptions seen from space (satellite photos) | Space

Mount Etna has been spewing lava across Sicily for weeks during a series of eruptions captured by a slew of Earth-orbiting satellites.

Also on Feb. 18, the European Space Agency's Copernicus Sentinel-2 mission, which is made up of two satellites, observed the eruption. The European satellites captured a moment that, using infrared imaging, showed the lava in bright orange and red.

A few days later, as Etna was erupting again on Feb. 23, the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's NOAA-20 satellite snapped an image with its VIIRS (Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite) instrument that highlights the plumes coming from the volcano.
