The problem with the Universe, as we see it today, is that we only get a snapshot of how things are right now. Nearby, the objects we see are well-evolved, as we see them as they are 13.8 billion years after the Big Bang. Far away, however, it might take millions, billions, or even more than ten billion years for the emitted light to arrive at our eyes, meaning that we're looking back in time.

Astronomers find supermassive black hole on the move – Harvard Gazette

Scientists have long theorized that supermassive black holes can wander through space — but catching them in the act has proven difficult.

Now, researchers at the Center for Astrophysics | Harvard & Smithsonian have identified the clearest case to date of a supermassive black hole in motion. Their results are published today in the Astrophysical Journal.

"We don't expect the majority of supermassive black holes to be moving; they're usually content to just sit around," said Dominic Pesce, an astronomer at the Center for Astrophysics who led the study. "They're just so heavy that it's tough to get them going. Consider how much more difficult it is to kick a bowling ball into motion than it is to kick a soccer ball — realizing that in this case, the 'bowling ball' is several million times the mass of our Sun.

NASA often shares pictures and videos of exotic objects from space that captivate their audience, and their latest post on a massive black hole is nothing short of extraordinary.

Shared on NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory's official Instagram profile, the post is about a massive super black hole named Sagittarius A*, weighing about 4 million times the mass of our Sun.

Massive X-ray Jet – Extending for 160,000 Light-Years – Spied From Supermassive Black Hole in

Chandra data may have revealed the most distant known supermassive black hole with an X-ray jet. The source of this jet is a quasar (a rapidly growing black hole) at the center of a young galaxy about 12.7 billion light years from Earth. The first panel is an artist’s illustration of a close-up view of a quasar and its jet, like the one in PJ352-52.

The inset of that graphic (and shown above in full) contains X-ray data from Chandra of PJ352-15 (purple) that has been combined with optical and infrared data from the Gemini-North telescope and the Keck-I telescope respectively. Astronomers observed PJ352-15 for a total of three days using the sharp vision of Chandra to detect evidence for the X-ray jet.

Supermassive black hole in motion detected : The Tribune India

Researchers at the Harvard-Smithsonian Centre for Astrophysics have identified the clearest case to date of a supermassive black hole in motion.

The supermassive black hole is moving with a speed of about 110,000 miles (approximately 177,028km) per hour inside the galaxy J0437+2456, said the study published in the Astrophysical Journal.

Catching a moving supermassive black holes has proven difficult, although scientists have long theorised that they can wander through space.
