Oceans' worth of water may remain buried in the crust of Mars , and not lost to space as previously long thought, a new study finds.
However, Mars is now cold and dry. Previously, scientists thought that after the Red Planet lost its protective magnetic field, solar radiation and the solar wind stripped it of much of its air and water . The amount of water Mars still possesses in its atmosphere and ice would only cover it with a global layer of water about 65 to 130 feet (20 to 40 m) thick.

"Everything is going great so far," said Kenneth Farley, a geochemist at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena and the mission's project scientist. He and others described Perseverance's progress on 16 March at a virtual meeting of the Lunar and Planetary Science Conference.

But none of this is likely to happen until June at the earliest. First, Perseverance must drive to a suitable spot to test Ingenuity, its helicopter. The spot will probably be a rock-strewn area not too far from the rover's current location. There, the rover will lower Ingenuity from its belly, drive off a safe distance and shoot a video as the helicopter takes to the Martian skies.

The vast majority of space is thought to be silent, but not Mars. Last month, NASA scientists heard the Martian wind for the first time, and it sounded like this.
DAVID GRUEL: That lower rumble, the thumping that you hear - that's the actual wind of Mars interacting with the microphone and then the microphone recording that noise and then sending it down to us here on the Earth. The higher-pitched noise - that's generated by the rover pumps that are inside the vehicle. We dampen them out so that the noise that people hear is the noise of the wind and less the noise of the actual rover itself.

This spectacular dune field sits in the centre of Lomonosov crater, deep in the northern hemisphere of Mars (65ºN, 351ºE). It was imaged by the CaSSIS camera on the ESA-Roscosmos ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter (TGO) on 2 December, 2020. The image was taken as part of a campaign to track the evolution of the dune field throughout the year.
NASA honors Navajo language on Mars with Perseverance rover rock names | Space
After landing successfully on the Red Planet Feb. 18, NASA's Perseverance rover is exploring, focusing its sights on a rock named "Máaz," the Navajo word for "Mars." The team behind the rover is in collaboration with the Navajo Nation Office of the President and Vice President , and together they have been naming different features on the Martian surface using words in the Navajo language.
Mission scientists at NASA worked with Navajo (or Diné) team member Aaron Yazzie, an engineer for NASA's Mars 2020 mission at the agency's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California to seek the Navajo Nation's permission and collaboration to name these features. (Yazzie built the drill bits that the rover will use to collect samples on the planet.

The sampling system is a new feature for a NASA rover. The machine will collect samples, seal them in tubes and leave them on the surface. The equipment -- including drilling gear and 43 sample containers -- is located under the belly of the rover.
The belly pan will end up as one more artifact of human exploration on Mars. It's a good thing there are no tickets for littering on the red planet.
