Think there aren't many more space firsts beyond the first man on the moon? Think again with a look at 50 historic firsts in outer space.
In its first manned rocket launch, SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket on May 30 is set to bring NASA astronauts to the International Space Station. The spaceflight, taking off from the same launch pad used to bring people to the moon, represents other milestones , as well: It's the first time a private company is sending people to space; it's also the first space launch since 2011 to leave from the United States. The launch was scheduled for May 27 but was rescheduled because of rain .
Quite a lot has been going on:
Scientists want to build a doomsday vault on the moon | Science | beatricedailysun.com
Engineers want to build an underground lunar ark, filled with millions of seed, spore, sperm and egg samples from Earth's species, hidden in a network of tubes on the moon to provide a genetic backup for the planet in the event of a doomsday scenario.
They said the vault could protect the genetic materials in the event of "total annihilation of Earth" which would be triggered by a major drop in biodiversity — but any move to build such a bunker is a long way off.
Understanding SpaceX's involvement in space travel | wfmynews2.com
GREENSBORO, N.C. — SpaceX recently launched a Starship rocket that exploded shortly after successfully landing vertically in Boca Chica, Texas.
This was SpaceX's third try at landing a Starship rocket, which is a heavy-left rocket designed to carry people and 100 tons of cargo to the moon and Mars.

Journey to the Dragon Palace: Inside Hayabusa2's history-making asteroid mission - CNET
In a gray camouflage tee and blue denim jeans, Masaki Fujimoto is dressed all too casually for a man about to make history. Queen's Don't Stop Me Now has been playing on repeat, in his head, for weeks. One line is particularly prophetic for the 56-year-old astrophysicist.

In less than 48 hours, a 16-inch-wide steel capsule will do just that, rocketing through the atmosphere before unfurling a parachute and gently landing in a sparsely populated area of the Australian outback. Locked inside is ancient cargo -- pieces of a 4.6 billion-year-old near-Earth asteroid collected by Hayabusa2, the star spacecraft in the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency fleet.
Many things are taking place:
Pack Your Bags! We're Going on a Space Vacation! - Via Satellite -
Space vacations are a real thing! If you want to see the Earth from a brand new perspective, and experience weightlessness like a real astronaut, and you have a few million dollars to spare, you can sign up right now. Space Adventures will take you to Low-Earth Orbit and beyond on a SpaceX Falcon 9. Virgin Galactic and Blue Origin will also start opening up space tourism lines in the near future.
But, what is the space tourism experience really like? Is it safe? How long is the trip? Will they serve food? Do I have to go through astronaut training? Do I have to be a multimillionaire to afford all this?

NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, has chosen three companies to participate in a new partnership to test and evaluate satellite servicing technologies.
Altius Space Machines of Broomfield, Colorado, Honeybee Robotics of Brooklyn, New York, and Orbit Fab of San Francisco will provide cooperative robotic grapple fixtures and data to be studied by NASA's Exploration and In-Space Services projects division (NExIS, formerly known as the Satellite Servicing Projects Division) engineers. The engineers will utilize robotics facilities at Goddard via Space Act Agreements to collect data on the performance of the companies' fixtures.
Three Companies to Provide Robotic Grapple Fixtures for NASA Testing | ExecutiveBiz
NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland has selected Altius Space Machines , Honeybee Robotics and Orbit Fab to provide robotic grapple fixtures for a testing initiative slated to begin in the spring and summer of 2021.
Engineers at NASA's Exploration and In-Space Services projects division will evaluate the companies' hardware using robotics facilities at Goddard under space act agreements as part of efforts to identify technologies that could support in-orbit satellite servicing operations, the agency said Monday.
What we can expect to see at the first ever space hotel
Even before Yury Gagarin became the first human to venture into outer space, travel moguls have been dreaming of astro-tourism.
In 1958, three years prior to Gagarin's trailblazing journey in Vostok 1, a lunar dance showcase at the Conrad Hilton Hotel in Chicago set the rumour mill turning: Hilton was going to build a hotel on the moon. It still hasn't happened, of course, but almost 70 years on from that tableau in a Chicago hotel lobby, the first space resort looks set to become reality.
