At the Moon’s North and South Poles, the Sun is never more than 1.5° above or below the horizon. The resulting pattern of daylight and shadows is unlike anywhere else on the Moon — or the Earth. After zooming in on a small lunar highland area near the South Pole, this visualization recreates the illumination conditions there over a period of two lunar days, equal to two months on Earth.
This close to the pole, the Sun doesn’t rise and set. Instead, as the Moon rotates on its axis, the Sun skims the horizon, traveling a full 360 degrees around the terrain. Mountains as far as 75 miles (120 kilometers) away cast shadows across the landscape. With the Sun at such a low angle, it can never reach the floors of some deep craters. Places the Sun never reaches are known as permanently shadowed regions.

Last month, we told you about a group of eighth graders from Mill Middle School who entered a contest to create a unique concept for a city on the Moon. It’s called the Future City Competition.
Friday is the last day for voting. If you want to help them out, vote here. The winner will be announced on Wednesday.

SpaceX CEO Elon Musk tweeted on Thursday (April 1) he would put "a literal Dogecoin" (pronounced "dohj coin") on the "literal moon."
The self-proclaimed "techno-king of Tesla," Musk, 49, is an ardent supporter of cryptocurrencies, including Dogecoin and bitcoin. In February, Tesla announced that it had purchased $1.5 billion worth of bitcoin. One month later, Musk said Tesla would accept it as payment for its vehicles.

Nice photo. What camera settings made this possible? Did you use a digital camera? Didn't see the steeple-like mountain, but any little peeks into what's on the far side might get interesting (secret bases?). :-)
These craters are due to asteroid impacts, right? Makes you think about one hitting the earth and causing mass extinctions.
Most of the big stuff has been used up, luckily. Still, there are lots of potential smaller impactors, and it would only take one big one. For scale, the Chicxulub impactor that did in the dinos was only 6-9 miles in diameter.

LAKE LUZERNE - On Tuesday, March 16, 2021, Eugene Robert Moon of Lake Luzerne passed away at the age of 88. Eugene "Gene" was born July 9, 1932, in Bolton, NY to Ralph Moon and Hazel (Colson) Moon.
Gene attended Lake George School. He enjoyed anything outdoors and spent his time fishing, hunting, and riding his horse.
It was on one of these rides with friends that he met Myrtle Bennett of Lake Luzerne in 1952. They married the following year on Dec. 5, 1953. Gene and Myrtle raised six children in Lake Luzerne.
