A new Goldilocks black hole | Space | EarthSky

Astronomers have detected a “Goldilocks” or intermediate-mass black hole. It’s not small, not supermassive – but right in the middle – and it “sheds light” on how the supermassive black holes got so large.

Intermediate-mass black holes, larger than the ones formed from individual stars – but smaller than the supermassive ones at the centers of galaxies – should theoretically exist. Now astronomers say they’ve found one by detecting a gamma-ray burst that was gravitationally lensed by the black hole. In this diagram, the gamma ray burst is depicted on the right. The massive black hole in the center is acting as a lens, that is bending light from the gamma ray burst.

There was a lot of excitement when the Event Horizon Telescope ( EHT ) collaboration showed the world the first ever image of a black hole back in April 2019. Weighing in at 6.5 million times the mass of our Sun, this supermassive black hole is located in the galaxy Messier 87 , or M87, some 55 million light years away from Earth.

This was the first direct evidence that black holes exist. It also provided an extraordinary test of Einstein's theory of gravity and its underlying notions of space and time – probing gravity in its most extreme limits. But we still don't know much about these monsters.

Physicists Spot Sign of Intermediate-Mass Black Hole in Warped Gamma Rays

On August 30, 1995, 10-billion-year-old light from the early universe finally hit the Compton Gamma-ray Observatory, which was circling in Earth orbit. An Australian research team is now reporting that the gamma-ray burst contained evidence of an exceedingly rare intermediate-mass black hole, the sort that would help fill a hole in our understanding of these cosmic enigmas.

Intermediate-mass black holes exist, but, unlike their bigger and smaller compatriots, they offer little to our telescopes trying to spot them. Possible midsize black holes are rarely found, though astrophysicists have a few ideas about where to look and have even named a few candidates in recent years. There are only a handful of observed objects suspected of being an intermediate-mass black hole.

The astronomers who gave the world its first true glimpse of a black hole, have produced another landmark image, this time capturing the polarized light swirling around the same star-eating monster's magnetic fields, providing a stunning picture while advancing our knowledge of the darkness.

Never before has it been possible to measure polarization, which causes light waves to vibrate in a single plane, so close to the edge of a black hole.

The new observations, based on data collected by the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) in 2017, are key to understanding how a galaxy can project streams of energy thousands of lightyears outward from its core, more than 300 scientists reported Wednesday in a pair of studies.

Some Black Holes Are Impossible In Our Universe

For the real black holes that exist or get created in our Universe, we can observe the radiation ... [+] emitted by their surrounding matter, and the gravitational waves produced by the inspiral, merger, and ringdown phases. Although only a few X-ray binaries are known, LIGO and other gravitational wave detectors should be capable of filling in any mass gap ranges where black holes do abundantly exist.

If you take enough mass and compress it into a small enough volume of space, you'll inevitably form a black hole. Any mass in the Universe will curve the fabric of spacetime around it, and the more severely curved that spacetime fabric is, the more difficult it is to escape from that mass's gravitational pull. The smaller the volume becomes that your mass occupies, the faster you'd have to travel, at the edge of that object, to actually escape it.
