This image was captured by the International Space Station Expedition 59 crew as they orbited 400 kilometers above Quebec, Canada. Right of center, the ring-shaped lake is a modern reservoir within the eroded remnant of an ancient 100 kilometer diameter impact crater, which is over 200 million years old.
JPL's Center for Near Earth Object Studies will lead the hypothetical impact scenario to see how international agencies respond to an actual impact prediction.

Asteroid Apophis 99942 that could 'IMPACT EARTH' on new path | 7NEWS.com.au
"The results from a new radar observation campaign combined with precise orbit analysis have helped astronomers conclude that there is no risk of Apophis impacting our planet for at least a century," NASA shared on their website.
First observed by US and Australian astronomers in 2004, the asteroid named 99942 Apophis was initially thought to have a 2.7 per cent chance of impacting Earth when it flies by in 2029, that was then revised to 2068. That has now been ruled out.
What would happen if a giant asteroid hit the earth? A "hellscape" scenario
Whenever we see a shooting star, that's a meteorite the size of a grain of dust hitting the Earth.
But what if something much larger, around 10km across (the size of the asteroid that wiped out the dinosaurs) collided with our planet? Such events are extremely rare. They only happen every 50 million years or so, Britt Scharringhausen , an associate professor of physics and astronomy at Beloit College, tells Inverse . But the impact of such an impact would be devastating.

'Asteroids are the only objects in our solar system that are more or less unchanged since the very beginning of the solar system's formation,' said Dr Fabio Ferrari, who studies asteroid dynamics at the University of Bern, Switzerland. 'If we know what's inside asteroids, we can understand a lot about how planets formed, how everything that we have in our solar system has formed and might evolve in the future.'
Using Nukes to Deflect Asteroids: Here's What the Tests Show
Relatively speaking, an asteroid doesn’t have to be huge in order to cause serious destruction. The simulated one in this study was 300 meters in diameter, or about 1,000 feet. That’s six Olympic-length swimming pools. It’s not rogue planet big, but it would still take out several big city blocks with the initial impact alone.
An asteroid this size is hardly hypothetical; as of October 2020, scientists have discovered 9,336 near-Earth object/asteroids (NEO/NEA) with diameters greater than 140 meters. Of those, scientists have classified 2,122 as potentially hazardous objects (PHOs). So, the risk here isn’t astronomically low—it’s much more, well, down to Earth.

A Game of Stones: Five Novels Set in Asteroid Belts | Tor.com
A cursory glance at the genre makes it clear that Randall Garrett did not invent Belters, those stalwarts of the asteroid belt. Examples abound in older SF, in the works of Smith, Heinlein, and Leinster. But Randall Garrett's Belter stories seem to have been the strongest influence on Larry Niven, who lifted the Belter culture wholesale for his Known Space series. After this, Niven's Belters seem to have had the greatest influence on later authors.
But enough literary history! Let's just note that the Belt and the riches it might hold are irresistible for authors looking for rugged frontiers in which to set their tales. Consider these five comparatively recent works.
NASA collects sample of ancient asteroid for voyage back to Earth | WUTR/WFXV - CNYhomepage.com
CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. ( NewsNation Now ) — A U.S. spacecraft touched down onto an ancient asteroid roughly 200 million miles away on Tuesday, as part of a mission to collect a sample and bring it back to Earth to study.
NASA’s OSIRIS-REx spacecraft touched the surface of asteroid Bennu for an attempted sample collection at around 6 p.m. EDT.
The mission first launched from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida in 2016, and the spacecraft reached Bennu in 2018.
