Croatia’s Gideon Brothers raises $31M for its 3D vision-enabled autonomous warehouse robots

Proving that Central and Eastern Europe remains a powerhouse of hardware engineering matched with software, Gideon Brothers (GB), a Zagreb, Croatia-based robotics and AI startup, has raised a $31 million Series A round led by Koch Disruptive Technologies (KDT), the venture and growth arm of Koch Industries Inc., with participation from DB Schenker, Prologis Ventures, and Rite-Hite.

The round also includes participation from several of Gideon Brothers’ existing backers: Taavet Hinrikus (co-founder of TransferWise), Pentland Ventures, Peaksjah, HCVC (Hardware Club), Ivan Topčić, Nenad Bakić, and Luca Ascani.

McDonald's automated drive-thru is just the latest sign of robots taking over fast-food

Fast-food's biggest players are letting the robots right in through the front door as they seek out ways to overcome rising wages and worker shortages. 

McDonald's CEO Chris Kempczinski disclosed at a recent Wall Street conference the company is testing automated voice ordering for its drive-thru. The tests are being conducted at about 10 locations in McDonald's backyard of Chicago, IL.

"We have over the last several years spent a lot of money that shows up in the G&A line, looking at better ways to automate the kitchen," Kempczinski said. "And this is could we do automated fryers, could you do automated grills. I mean let's push the envelope on how you can go with automation."

A system to benchmark the posture control and balance of humanoid robots

In recent years, roboticists have developed a wide variety of robots with human-like capabilities. This includes robots with bodies that structurally resemble those of humans, also known as humanoid robots.

Testing the performance of humanoid robots can sometimes be challenging, as there are numerous measures to consider when trying to determine their applicability in real-world scenarios.

Researchers at Technische Universität Berlin and the University Clinic of Freiburg recently created a system to evaluate the posture control and balance of both humans and humanoid robots. This system, presented in a paper pre-published on arXiv , is designed to assess balance and posture control of robots or humans as they perform different movements on a moving surface.

Of course a situation like this calls for out of the box thinking. Ideas that no one has thought of before. So the fact it was McDonald’s who came up with a concept to try and fix the problem is not surprising. This is the same company that pretty much invented fast food as we know it after all.
