How to watch the full "strawberry" moon — the last supermoon of 2021 - CBS
A supermoon occurs when the moon is at its closest point to Earth in its orbit, known as perigee. It appears slightly larger and brighter than a typical full moon. However, scientists have yet to agree on exactly how to officially classify the phenomenon, so there is some disagreement as to whether June's moon counts as a supermoon.
"For 2021, some publications consider the four full Moons from March to June, some the three full Moons from April to June, and some only the two full Moons in April and May as supermoons," NASA's Gordon Johnston said .
Long days and long moon shadows | Post Bulletin
This is our last full weekend of spring, almost. That's because summer officially begins at 10:32 on Sunday evening, the moment of the summer solstice. Even though we won't see it, the sun will reach its most northern position in our celestial dome in its very slow annual eastward migration among the stars.
Being so far north, the sun takes the longest, highest arc across our sky, providing us with the maximum amount of daylight, more than 15 hours and 29 minutes of daylight here in Rochester. The sun will achieve a midday altitude of nearly 70 degrees above the southern horizon. Because of that, you'll cast your shortest midday shadow of the year. Like it or not, from now until the winter solstice in late December, daylight hours gradually decline.
ACE? Rigel? NASA wants help naming manikin to fly around the moon. | Space
A moonbound 'manikin' that will fly on a forthcoming NASA Artemis program mission needs a name — and the agency wants your help.
Starting Wednesday (June 13), the "Name the Moonikin" competition began between eight names. Social media users on Twitter , Facebook , and Instagram can choose their favorite in four brackets, voting between one of two names in each bracket.
The competition's "final showdown" will occur on Monday, June 28, NASA said in a contest announcement.
Starwatch: moon glides past Jupiter and Saturn in early hours | Astronomy | The Guardian
Consider this a heads up for next weekend, when the moon is going to glide past Jupiter and Saturn in the early hours of the morning.
The chart shows the view looking south-south-east from London at 03.00 BST on the morning of Monday 28 June. At this particular time, the moon will sit between the two bright planets. The night before, the moon will be located to the west of Saturn, and the night after, it will be to the east of Jupiter.
Community completes 238K mile 'journey' to the moon - centraljersey.com
A community of hikers and cyclists completed the 2020-21 Journey to the Moon on May 28 after Memorial Day weekend, completing a 238,000 “journey” to outer space.
Each earth mile was recorded in "LHT Miles." Each LHT mile equaled 22 miles, or the length of the the Lawrence Hopewell Trail, making the virtual journey 10,818 LHT miles in length.
“The virtual event brought LHT fans and friends together to collectively hike and bike 238,000 miles to the moon. Journey to the Moon was launched on Oct. 14, 2020, to celebrate the month's two full moons,” said Ruth Markoe, LHT board member and leader of the Journey to the Moon project.
Tuxera and Puli Space Technologies Set to Touch Down on the Moon in 2022 Aboard Peregrine Lander
The Finnish tech company has provided financial and technical support to Hungarian Team Puli in their successful efforts to send the first Hungarian payload to the Moon.
The historic "Memory of Mankind (MoM) on the Moon" venture from Puli Space Technologies will bring a lasting archive of imagery, news editorials, books, personal texts from the people of Earth to the moon on a special aluminum alloy plaque - including a brief statement from Tuxera. The plaque, which is resistant to lunar conditions, is an innovative means to store data in physical form.
NASA is learning how to farm on Mars and the moon
Whether from continent to continent or coast to coast, people have always made their big moves together with plants. Traveling away from Earth would be no different. Our success on other worlds will rest, in part, on the supple stems of plants.
"Plants are things that we take with us as explorers," says Anna-Lisa Paul, the co-director of the University of Florida Space Plants Lab. "They're part of our core heritage whether we think of it or not."
On all the brief forays into space so far, astronauts have sustained themselves almost entirely on packaged food. But if humans ever hope to set up long-term habitats on the moon or Mars, their physical and mental health would benefit from the ability to grow plants.
