China plans to send its first crewed mission to Mars in 2033

GUANGZHOU, China — China plans to send its first crewed mission to Mars in 2033 as it continues to boost its space ambitions in a battle with the U.S.

Wang Xiaojun, head of the state-owned China Academy of Launch Vehicle Technology, outlined the country's Mars plans for the first time this month at a space conference in Russia, according to the academy.

NASA spacecraft spots China's Mars rover Zhurong heading south on Red Planet (photo) | Space

China's first-ever Mars rover was on the move earlier this month, imagery by a NASA spacecraft shows.

The rover, named Zhurong, is part of Tianwen-1 , China's first fully homegrown Red Planet mission, which arrived in orbit around Mars in February. Zhurong separated from the Tianwen-1 orbiter on May 14 and touched down on the vast plain Utopia Planitia a few hours later.

Study Looks More Closely at Mars' Underground Water Signals

The bright white region of this image shows the icy cap that covers Mars' south pole, composed of frozen water and frozen carbon dioxide. ESA's Mars Express imaged this area of Mars on Dec. 17, 2012, in infrared, green and blue light, using its High Resolution Stereo Camera.

ESA's quadruped rover SpaceBok could jump around Moon and Mars

Seeking to create a next-generation quadruped rover capable of jumping in low-gravity environments, the Swiss-based robotic labs at ETH Zurich and ZHAW Winterthur have engineered an agile exploratory vehicle named SpaceBok.

The ambitious SpaceBok team is comprised of 12 students from ETH Zurich and ZHAW Winterthur in Switzerland, whose varied fields of study encompass mechanical, electrical, and systems engineering.

Mars colonists are going to wish they had an atmosphere above them

"On Mars however, with a surface pressure one 100th that of the Earth, the impactors generally make it to the surface," says the team from the HiRISE camera on the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO).

HiRISE (High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment), on board MRO, took this image of a small impact crater that was formed sometime in the last five years. Although the crater is small, the rays of ejecta thrown out by the impact are easy to spot, stretching out almost a kilometer.
