Early solar system harbored a gap between its inner and outer regions - Tech Explorist

According to scientists at MIT and elsewhere, there was a mysterious gap within the protoplanetary disk in the early solar system around 4.567 billion years ago, near the region where the asteroid belt resides today.

Benjamin Weiss, professor of planetary sciences in MIT’s Department of Earth, Atmospheric and Planetary Sciences (EAPS), said, “Over the last decade, observations have shown that cavities, gaps, and rings are common in disks around other young stars.

First-ever discovery of planet orbiting dead star provides glimpse into our solar system's future

The newfound planet, a gas giant about 40% larger than Jupiter , and its parent star, which orbits near the center of the Milky Way , were accidentally discovered during a "gravitational microlensing" event in 2010.

Gravitational microlensing occurs when two stars at different distances from Earth temporarily align from our perspective. The gravity of the star in the foreground acts like a lens and magnifies the light from the background star.

Lucy spacecraft begins 12-year mission to study asteroids and the origins of the Solar System -

The NASA space probe Lucy began its 12-year mission after being successfully launched from Cape Canaveral aboard an Atlas V 401 rocket.

Lucy was selected in 2017 for development and launch, alongside the Psyche mission, after more than two years of review, and winning out over 26 other proposals.

To Unravel Earliest History of Our Solar System, NASA's Lucy Mission Launches Toward Asteroid

Tomorrow, on October 16th, NASA will launch the Lucy Mission into space—it will set a course for the Trojan Asteroids, with the aim of uncovering the earliest histories of our solar system.

Thought to contain the unused remains of the outer planets, the Trojans sit in two separate clouds called L4 and L5 around the same orbit as Jupiter.

See the 42 Biggest Asteroids in Solar System in Detail | Digital Trends

Far out on the border of the outer solar system between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter lies the asteroid belt, where hundreds of thousands of small objects orbit the sun. Most of these objects are small rocky asteroids, but some are known to be 60 miles or larger across.

The asteroids were imaged using ESO’s Very Large Telescope, marking the most detailed observation of many of these bodies to date.

Meteorite That Crashed Into Canadian Woman's Home Can Reveal Much About Solar System's Origin |

While NASA is sending a spacecraft to Jupiter's asteroids in an unprecedented mission to unravel the mystery of solar system's origin, a physicist has said that a meteorite, that crash-landed in a home in Canada this month, can offer similar results. Peter G.

The meteorite pierced through the roof of a home in British Columbia and landed on the pillow near a sleeping woman  on October 4. She was awakened by the sound of the crash and the sensation she felt on her face because of the debris. She immediately called the emergency helpline, 911.
