Unexpected radio signals detected in deep space may reveal hidden planets - Study Finds

BRISBANE, Australia — Surprising radio waves coming from distant stars may be revealing the presence of undiscovered planets in those solar systems, researchers in Australia say.

"We've discovered signals from 19 distant red dwarf stars, four of which are best explained by the existence of planets orbiting them," Dr. Benjamin Pope says in a university release .

A close encounter with stars, planets : The Tribune India

Scientists find evidence the early solar system harbored a gap between its inner and outer

In the early solar system, a "protoplanetary disk" of dust and gas rotated around the sun and eventually coalesced into the planets we know today.

A new analysis of ancient meteorites by scientists at MIT and elsewhere suggests that a mysterious gap existed within this disk around 4.567 billion years ago, near the location where the asteroid belt resides today.

NASA launches first space probe to study Jupiter's Trojan asteroids | Reuters

Oct 16 (Reuters) - NASA launched a first-of-its kind mission on Saturday to study Jupiter's Trojan asteroids, two large clusters of space rocks that scientists believe are remnants of primordial material that formed the solar system's outer planets.

Lucy's mission is a 12-year expedition to study a record number of asteroids. It will be the first to explore the Trojans, thousands of rocky objects orbiting the sun in two swarms - one ahead of the path of giant gas planet Jupiter and one behind it.

Did Titan Give Saturn its Tilt? - Universe Today

Giant planets like Saturn don’t just tilt over all by themselves: something has to knock them over, or tug on them gravitationally, to push them off axis.

But no planet in our solar system is perfectly level. Jupiter is the closest, boasting an obliquity (tilt) of just 3.12 degrees. Earth’s obliquity is much more substantive at 23.45 degrees, causing us to experience an annual cycle of seasons as our homeworld wobbles on its axis.

There might have once been a Mars-size planet out by Neptune, but where'd it go?

Researchers Brett Gladman of the University of British Columbia and Nancy Volk of the University of Arizona find it highly unlikely that the only rocky planets which ever formed in the outer solar system, among its immense gas giants, were dwarf planets like Pluto and Ceres and Sedna.

"The current transneptunian population consists of both implanted and primordial objects," Gladman and Volk said in a study recently published in Annual Review of Astronomy and Astrophysics .
