How a Nuclear Bomb Could Save Earth From a Stealthy Asteroid - The New York Times

One day, astronomers may spot an asteroid months away from a cataclysmic rendezvous with Earth. Our only chance of survival at such a late stage would be to try to use a nuclear explosive to obliterate it.

Instead, their focus is on relatively small asteroids, those about the size of football stadiums, notable for their abundance as well as their ability to evade asteroid-hunting observatories. "Those are the ones that we tend to worry more about because they could come out of nowhere," Dr.

Asteroid the Size of Golden Gate Bridge To Pass Earth During October 2021 Full Moon

An asteroid with a diameter equal to the height of the Golden Gate Bridge will pass Earth on the evening of the October 2021 full moon, also known as the Hunter's Moon.

The space rock designated 1996 VB3, with a diameter of 220 meters, will pass Earth on the evening of October 20. It will reach a minimum distance of around 2 million miles (3.2 million km) from Earth. That's just under nine times the distance between Earth and the moon.

This NASA spacecraft is on its way to Jupiter's mysterious asteroid swarms | MIT Technology Review

NASA's Lucy spacecraft, named for an early human ancestor whose skeleton provided insights into our species' muddled origins, has begun the first leg of its 12-year journey to help us better understand our solar system's ancient origins.

After lifting off from Cape Canaveral early Saturday morning on an Atlas V rocket, Lucy is now headed to study asteroids in an area around Jupiter that's been relatively unchanged since the formation of the solar system some 4.6 billion years ago.

A spacecraft could use gravity to prevent a dangerous asteroid impact

Designed to avoid such outcomes, gravity tractors come in one of four varieties. The stationary version parks a relatively heavy probe next to an object and slowly pulls it into a different trajectory.

Dr. Ketema's work suggests using a modified version of the stationary and halo orbit types. The new orbit is called "restricted Keplerian motion," which involves moving a probe back and forth on a specific side of an asteroid to try to force it as much as possible in a particular direction. Dr.

NASA eyes solar array glitch on new Lucy asteroid spacecraft | Space

A new NASA spacecraft headed for the Trojan asteroids near Jupiter has a small issue with its solar panels, but the probe isn't in immediate danger, space agency officials said.

The Lucy spacecraft , which launched smoothly on Saturday (Oct. 16) atop a United Launch Alliance Atlas V rocket, began unfolding its two massive solar panels about an hour after launch.

Discoverer of Lucy asteroid mission's namesake fossil excited to watch Saturday launch | Space

Decades ago, Donald Johanson found fossils of an early hominin that would rewrite scientists' understanding of our species. This weekend, he'll see a spacecraft named for the discovery blast off Earth.

Johanson, a paleoanthropologist at the Institute of Human Origins at Arizona State University, made his landmark discovery in 1974. In northern Ethiopia, he found the fossilized remains of a 3.2-million-year-old relative of humans ; the team nicknamed the find Lucy.

NASA's asteroid hunter Lucy soars into sky with diamonds

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) — A NASA spacecraft named Lucy rocketed into the sky with diamonds Saturday morning on a 12-year quest to explore eight asteroids.

Seven of the mysterious space rocks are among swarms of asteroids sharing Jupiter's orbit, thought to be the pristine leftovers of planetary formation.

Map of Earth's Asteroid and Meteor Impact Craters - HeritageDaily - Archaeology News

In impacts with large objects, material can be displaced and ejected to form a crater when significant volumes of excavated material from both the object and the body impacted is melted and vaporised.

Across the history of our planet, around 190 terrestrial impact craters have been identified that still survive the Earth's geological processes, with the most recent event occurring in 1947 at the Sikhote-Alin Mountains of south-eastern Russia.
