Algorithm Finds Triple-Moon Asteroid for The First Time

Astronomers from Thailand and France discovered that the asteroid 130 Elektra has three moons, making it the first known quadruple asteroid system in the universe.

Dr. Anthony Berdeu, from the National Astronomical Research Institute of Thailand, has developed a ground-breaking algorithm that voids light from the main asteroid by removing it from the image.

Bad Astronomy | Ancient asteroid impact on Wyoming/Nebraska border | SYFY WIRE

An asteroid around 4 kilometers wide — almost half the diameter of the Chixulub impactor — slammed into the Earth at 70,000 kilometers per hour.

That material went flying, given huge momentum by the impact. Some blocks of earth four meters in diameter were flung away at twice the speed of sound, falling in remote locations a great distance away, carving smaller but still respectable secondary craters into the ground.

Asteroid belts could mean habitable exoplanets | SYFY WIRE

Asteroids have struck fear into the human species ever since we found out what annihilated the dinosaurs , but the same kinds of space rocks that have caused mass extinctions have another face.

"Asteroids can impact the Earth when their orbital eccentricity is increased," Martin told SYFY WIRE. "This could happen through resonances. When an asteroid is within a resonance, its eccentricity gets excited, and its orbit can cross Earth's orbit and potentially collide with Earth."

Dynamical Origin Of The Dwarf Planet Ceres - SpaceRef

The Dwarf Planet Ceres revealed the presence of ammonia and other unique properties compared to other asteroids in the main belt which suggests that it was not formed in situ.

We model the early dynamical evolution of the outer Solar System to study possible dynamical mechanisms to implant a Ceres-sized planetesimal in the asteroid belt from the trans-Saturnian region.
