Lunar micrometeorite preserves solar system's early history

About half a century ago, six Apollo and three Luna missions to the Moon collected rock samples. The former returned some 380 kg, and the latter brought back less than a ½ kg. Curators of those collections have wisely preserved much of that material over the years for future scientific studies.

Glycine amino acid transformation under impacts by small solar system bodies, simulated via ...

Impacts by small solar system bodies (meteoroids, asteroids, comets and transitional objects) are characterized by a combination of energy dynamics and chemical modification on both terrestrial and small solar system bodies.

Crystal structure was examined by X-ray diffraction (XRD) method using the Cu K Ξ± radiation with a wavelength of 0.15406 nm (45 kV and 200 mA) and by Raman spectroscopy using a 532-nm laser source.

Comets fade even as deep in space as Saturn's orbit, scientists find | Space

When comets first appear near Earth, their bright tails of ionized gas stun observers, but on every subsequent return, they become dimmer.

Comets are essentially balls of dirty ice. Astronomers therefore believed that these objects become dimmer on their repeated returns to Earth because they released too much ice and gas during their earlier visits to the inner solar system.

How do planets form?

How do planets form? For many years scientists thought they understood this process by studying the one example we had access to: our own Solar System.

However, the discovery of planets around distant stars in the 1990s made it clear that the picture was much more complicated than we knew.
