In a step toward robots that can learn on the fly like humans do, a new approach expands training data sets for robots that work with soft objects like ropes and fabrics, or in cluttered environments.

It could cut learning time for new materials and environments down to a few hours rather than a week or two.

Robot vs human?

Automatic throat swab robots are being tested in Shanghai to help with COVID-19 nucleic acid testing and make the job of testers easier.

An automated nucleic acid testing site has been set up at Linfen Road Community Service Center in Jing'an District, with a robot, instead of humans, collecting swab samples.

Japan's forestry industry tests robots to address labor shortage | The Japan Times

The yellow, four-legged robot walks up a grass slope, then marches through a forest full of twigs. It even mounts a stump and then climbs down unassisted.

It's part of a trial run by Forestry and Forest Products Research Institute (FFPRI) and SoftBank Corp., using robots produced by Boston Dynamics. The goal: find a solution to Japan’s chronic labor shortage in the forestry industry.

Short-staffed hotels look to robots to cope with summer travel boom - Washington Times

Robots like Rosey from "The Jetsons" and C3PO from "Star Wars" have long helped meet the domestic needs of their fictional owners. Now real robots are helping hotels shore up staffing shortages amid a boom in summer travel.

"Guests just love it," said Danielle McNally, the hotel's director of marketing communications. "We dressed him up in a Celtics jersey for the playoffs and in a graduation cap for commencement season."
