NASA plans to protect Earth against asteroid impact; here is how | Tech News

Earth's orbit has been bombarded with asteroid flybys this month, with more than 35 asteroids just whizzing past Earth one by one and more on the way. Although these asteroids have passed by Earth safely, there will come a time when one of them would be on course for impact with Earth.

Although asteroids are safely passing near Earth these past few weeks, it doesn't mean a collision with Earth isn't on the cards. In fact, an asteroid was the reason behind the extinction of one of the largest species on the planet nearly 65 million years ago – dinosaurs.

NASA's Artemis I will deploy a solar sail satellite toward a nearby asteroid

One of these, the Near-Earth Asteroid (NEA) Scout mission, will deploy a solar sail once it reaches space, allowing it to propel itself towards a nearby asteroid using photons from the sun. Once there, NASA explains that it will image the asteroid in detail and send the data back to Earth.

ATLANTIC SKIES: Near-Earth objects come in all shapes and sizes and each with their own measurable ...

Any of the countless small celestial bodies that orbit within our solar system whose orbits bring them between 0.983 - 1.3 AUs proximity to Earth are referred to as near-earth objects (NEOs).

An AU, or astronomical unit, is the distance between the Earth and the sun: about 7,500,000 kilometres.
