Tool use has long been a hallmark of human intelligence, as well as a practical problem to solve for a vast array of robotic applications. But machines are still wonky at exerting just the right amount of force to control tools that aren't rigidly attached to their hands.

McKinney Public Library Adds Two Robots To Its Staff

Watch out, Jeff Bezos! You are not the only one taking an interest in automation around here anymore. Last week the John and Judy Gay Library in McKinney became the first library in the state of Texas to use automatic robots on the public floor.

The two little helpers are Orion Star's AI delivery robots the company promotes for restaurant use, but they have been adapted to guide visitors through the library, provide information and help keep things tidy by getting books to their correct shelves once readers are done with them.

The Robots Are Coming. Chicago OKs Pilot Program of Food Delivery Via Machine | Chicago News | WTTW

On Wednesday, Chicago's City Council approved a pilot program that will allow restaurants and grocery stores to make deliveries via "personal delivery devices (PDDs)," aka, robots.

Similar programs have rolled out in cities such as Los Angeles, Pittsburgh and Washington, D.C., as well as college campuses, including the University of Illinois-Chicago .
