Astronomers using the NSF's NOIRLab's SOAR telescope in Chile captured the vast plume of dust and ... [+] debris blasted from the surface of the asteroid Dimorphos by NASA's DART spacecraft when it impacted on 26 September 2022.
Here's more proof that, yes, NASA did successfully smash a spacecraft into an asteroid on September 26, 2022.
The asteroid targets of this NASA mission are turning out to be very strange | Space
NASA's Lucy spacecraft still has five years of trekking through space before it sees its first Trojan asteroid, but mission scientists are already getting a sense of what these rocks look like.
The Lucy mission launched in October 2021 to survey Trojan asteroids, which orbit the sun at the same distance as Jupiter , with one cluster ahead of the giant planet and a second cluster behind it.
Asteroid Smacked by NASA's DART Now Has Giant Comet-Like Debris Tail - CNET
Now, follow-up observations show the dust is being pushed away from the asteroid by the solar wind, creating a tail that's similar to those we're accustomed to seeing trailing comets.
DART, an experiment in planetary protection, aimed to see if essentially throwing a robot probe at an object from Earth could impact the path of that object's orbit.
NASA's DART mission crashed a spacecraft into an asteroid and got photos to prove it - Sudbury ...
This article by David Barnhart , University of Southern California originally appeared on the Conversation and is published here with permission.
In a world first, NASA has crashed a spacecraft into an asteroid in an attempt to push the rocky traveler off its trajectory. The Double Asteroid Redirection Test – or DART – is meant to test one potential approach that could prevent an asteroid from colliding with Earth.
Dinosaurs Were Doomed Even Before Asteroid Hit Earth: Study
A study of dinosaur eggs from the time of their mass extinction has said the species was already on its way out before an asteroid struck.
Researchers from the Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoanthropology (IVPP) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, who examined more than 1,000 fossilized dinosaur eggs and eggshells, found dinosaur diversity was declining when the asteroid smashed into the earth 66 million years ago.
NASA Asteroid Crash Leaves 6,000 Miles of Debris, See Pictures
Two days after the impact of NASA's DART mission, the powerful SOAR Telescope in Chile was able to capture images of the dust and debris forming a comet-like plume. The breathtaking pictures show a vast trail of debris more than 6,000 miles long as a result of the impact.
According to NOIRLab's official website, the asteroid Dimorphos' new trail was imaged by astronomers Teddy Kareta from the Lowell Observatory and Matthew Knight from the US Naval Academy. The images were captured from NOIRLab's Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory in Chile.
