Dart: Asteroid deflection experiment boosted by debris - BBC News
The Nasa probe that struck an asteroid in September to try to deflect its path had a bigger effect because of all the debris it kicked out.
The Dart mission slammed into egg-shaped Dimorphos to demonstrate how hazardous rocks posing a threat to the Earth could be moved out of the way.
NASA's Double Asteroid Redirection Test was a smashing success in 2022 | New Scientist
On 26 September, after travelling 11 million kilometres from Earth in nine months, NASA’s Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) craft slammed into the space rock Dimorphos .
Dimorphos is a small moonlet that orbits a larger asteroid called Didymos. Before the impact, Dimorphos circled Didymos once every 11 hours and 55 minutes. The crash moved it slightly closer and now an orbit takes only 11 hours and 23 minutes.
World's first asteroid-hunting spacecraft to launch in 2028
NASA has announced plans to launch NEO Surveyor, the world’s first asteroid-hunting spacecraft, in 2028 — cementing its commitment to protecting Earth from potentially devastating asteroid impacts.
The challenge: Asteroids that come within 30 million miles of Earth are called “near-Earth objects” (NEOs), and if one of them wider than 460 feet were to hit our planet, it could potentially flatten a city.

A Fireball That Exploded Over Canada Has Been Traced to a Very Unexpected Origin : ScienceAlert
Earth is under constant bombardment from space. Dust , pebbles, and chunks of rock fall into our atmosphere on a daily basis, sometimes burning up spectacularly in a blazing streak across the sky.
But scientists have ascertained that one such fireball that exploded over Canada last year is not the usual kind of meteor.
The #DARTMission investigation team discussed early results from DART's impact at #AGU22, revealing that the spacec… https://t.co/a4cV5EwCGv AsteroidWatch (from Washington, D.C.) Thu Dec 15 20:13:25 +0000 2022
