Solar system is estimated to be about 4.57 billion years old: Research

Our solar system is estimated to be about 4.57 billion years old. Previous analyses of ancient meteorites have shown that minerals were created through chemical reactions with water as far back as 4.5 billion years ago.

In research recently published in Nature Astronomy, scientists using isotopic analysis discovered that carbonate minerals from the asteroid were crystallized through reactions with water, which originally accreted to the asteroid as ice in the still-forming solar system, then warmed into liquid.

The Ryugu asteroid holds a key to understanding solar system formation

Discovered in 1999, Japanese scientists working on the Hayabusa2 spacecraft have inspected the Ryugu asteroid, known as 162173 Ryugu, which was approximately 900 metres in diameter.

In this asteroid, Ancient grains of dust that are older than the solar system itself has been found in samples brought to Earth by the Japanese Hayabusa2 spacecraft nearly two years ago.

Comets falling into our solar system | Local Briefs | leadertelegram.com

Grab your binoculars, there is a comet passing through the inner solar system. Comet C/2022 E3 ZTF will be brightest around Jan. 30, so hope for some clear evenings and look near the North Star. In an area with little light pollution, it might be visible to the naked eye.

Editor's note: Astronomy Update is provided by the Chippewa Valley Astronomical Society and is compiled by Lauren Likkel, an emeritus of the UW-Eau Claire department of physics and astronomy.

How to Watch the Green Comet During the New Moon - The New York Times

A green-hued comet from the outer solar system is set to swing through Earth's neighborhood in the coming days for the first time in 50,000 years.

The comet has been steadily gaining brightness and will make its closest approach on Feb. 2, when it comes within 26.4 million miles of the planet — 110 times the distance to the moon. From the Northern Hemisphere, the comet is likely to be faintly visible to the naked eye.

New study of comets provides insight into chemical composition of early solar system - EIN Presswire

A new study by University of Central Florida researchers has found strong evidence that the outgassing of molecules from comets could trace the chemical composition of the early solar system.

The work was supported by the U.S. National Science Foundation and the results are published in The Planetary Science Journal .

See the conjunction of Venus and Saturn in free webcast on Jan. 22 | Space

During the evening of Sunday (Jan. 22) the solar system planets Saturn and Venus will meet up in the night sky making a close approach. Luckily, skywatchers who don't want to brave the bitter cold of January can watch the encounter from the comfort of their homes.

The Virtual Telescope Project will stream the close-approach and the arrangement, known as a "conjunction," between Venus , the second planet from the sun, and Saturn , the solar system's second-largest planet.

Breakthrough by Parker Solar Probe!

NASA's scientists have made a breakthrough in a 60-year quest to understand the origin of the solar wind. Scientists have found that the jets or jetlets, at the base of the Sun's outer atmosphere could power the solar wind.

"Scientists with NASA's Parker Solar Probe mission have uncovered significant new clues about the origins of the solar wind – a continual stream of charged particles released from the Sun that fills the solar system," NASA said in a report .
