Discovered in 2002, it becomes the seventh place in the solar system where rings are found after Saturn, Jupiter, Uranus, Neptune and two minor planets—Chariklo and Haumea.
Unlike the rings around all those bodies, Quaoar's are far from it, which is confusing to planetary scientists because it's thought that rings only exist close-in where tidal forces prevent the material the makes rings from clumping to form moons.
Astronomers Spot a Surprising Ring System Lurking in the Outer Solar System - CNET
This newfound cosmic bling orbits much farther out than other ring systems, causing astronomers to rethink existing theories about how such rings form.
The rings are too small, faint and distant to see in a direct optical image. They were found instead using a high-speed camera called HiPERCAM, which is mounted on the world's largest optical telescope in the Canary Islands.
Our favorite moons of the Solar System | The Planetary Society
More than 240 moons are known to exist in our Solar System, and more are being discovered all the time. About three quarters of them orbit Jupiter and Saturn , the rest taking their place around other planets and dwarf planets like Pluto .
It's hard to choose favorites from among all these wonderful little worlds, but here are eight moons that stand out for their scientific interest and exploratory promise.
Jupiter now has the most moons in the solar system
(CNN) – Scientists say Jupiter has some new bragging rights in our solar system besides being the largest planet.
According to astronomers, it also has the most moons after they recently discovered more than 12 orbiting around the planet.
A second telescope in Chile captured similar images last August, and follow-up observations confirmed the new discovery.
