This collage shows six planetary radar observations of 2011 AG5 a day after the asteroid made its close approach to Earth on Feb. 3. With dimensions comparable to the Empire State Building, 2011 AG5 is one of the most elongated asteroids to be observed by planetary radar to date.
NASA Images a Weirdly Long Asteroid
Six radar observations made of an asteroid swinging by our planet have revealed an unusually oblong space rock. The object is three times as long as it is wide— an irregular shape, as far as asteroids are concerned.
The asteroid, called 2011 AG5, is about the shape and size of the Empire State Building, minus the 222-foot antenna of course . The asteroid's nearest approach to Earth happened on February 3, when it came within 1.1 million miles of our planet.
Small Asteroid Spotted Hours Before Demise - Sky & Telescope - Sky & Telescope
The swift detection of a small asteroid, and recovery of its surviving fragments, shows we're getting better at spotting incoming objects.
An meteorite fall this week put key detection methods for incoming asteroids to the test, resulting in swift recovery of surviving fragments.
We are nowhere close to defending Earth from a cataclysmic asteroid - Big Think
Last September, NASA smashed a spacecraft into a small asteroid. The results were impressive, as shown in the image above.
The Double Asteroid Redirection Test, or DART , was a success as a prototype technological demonstration. But what can we say about the impact of the mission? What does it mean for our chances of defending the planet from cosmic calamity? Unfortunately, not much — not yet, anyway.
