Don't Panic: The Valentine's Day 2046 asteroid will not hit Earth. Here's why.

That’s generally the way to bet about any space rock, but if you only read the headlines last week when a new near-Earth asteroid was discovered , you might get a different impression.

That “could” carried a lot of weight, though. If you read deeper, the Chicken Littling calmed down a bit, and you’d find the odds of impact are low and likely to get lower. But these articles never explain how this likely lowering works , showing just why the odds tend to drop.

How Is NASA Preparing for Asteroid Bennu's Return?

The OSIRIS-REx spacecraft is currently on the final leg of its journey back to Earth, with samples from asteroid Bennu.

The asteroid samples—which likely hold clues into the birth of the solar system—are due back on September 24 this year.

When it arrives, a sample capsule will parachute down into the Utah desert. It will be the first-ever U.S. mission to return an asteroid sample to Earth.
