The DART mission, NASA's first attempt to prove whether it is possible to shift an asteroid away from a collision course with Earth, has been described as a "great success" by scientists involved in the project.
"DART was a smashing success," Andy Rivkin, a researcher at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL), said as he and other DART researchers presented the results of the mission at the 8th Planetary Defense Conference in Vienna, Austria, on Monday (April 3).

NASA's Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) was a success, and according to the space agency, the entire mission was a " great success ".
DART was the world's first planetary defense mission, as the objective was to see if it was possible to change the orbit of a binary asteroid system. The target of the mission was the smaller of the two asteroids, Dimorphos, which is orbiting its larger companion asteroid, Didymos.
Nasa puzzled by spinning asteroid that is flinging rocks into space | The Independent
Astronomers have found that the asteroid Didymos may be spinning so fast that it could be constantly spewing debris and materials into space , an advance that may have an impact on how such space rocks are studied.
Didymos is the larger companion space rock of the asteroid Dimorphos that Nasa impacted last year as part of its Dart mission.
