The researchers have developed a robot that uses radio waves, which can pass through walls, to sense occluded objects. The robot, called RF-Grasp, combines this powerful sensing with more traditional computer vision to locate and grasp items that might otherwise be blocked from view. The advance could one day streamline e-commerce fulfillment in warehouses or help a machine pluck a screwdriver from a jumbled toolkit.

LONGMONT, Colo. — The department of special education at St. Vrain Valley School District worked throughout the school year with the Innovation Center's robotics program to help special needs students with social skills by using robots, according to a news release from SVVSD.

A project team of high school students developed Socially Assistive Robotics applications at the Innovation Center . In January, they partnered with teachers and staff at five district schools and used robots to support special education students with self-regulation, self-determination and socialization, according to Mari Stevenson, SVVSD special education area coordinator.

North American companies buying more robots to keep up with demand - FM
North American companies boosted spending on industrial robots in the first quarter as they scrambled to keep up with surging demand in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Companies ordered 9,098 robots in the first quarter, a 19.6% increase over a year ago, according to the Association for Advancing Automation, an industry group based in Ann Arbor, Michigan. The orders were valued at over $466 million in total.
Robots were once concentrated in the auto industry but are now moving into more corners of the economy, from e-commerce warehouses to food processing plants. For the first time last year, most of the robots ordered by companies in North America weren't destined for auto factories or their parts suppliers.
