Google parent Alphabet launches Intrinsic: a new company to build software for industrial robots

Google's parent-company Alphabet has a birth to announce: a new company called Intrinsic which will focus on building software for industrial robots.

Details on what exactly Intrinsic is building or who its customers will be are unclear.

Robotics have been an obsession at Google for years, but the company's efforts have been unfocused and have yet to produce any commercial hits.

GM is putting robots in its facilities to improve employee experiences

Robots take the wheel: Lyft to offer driverless rides in Austin next year

Austin is set to be one of the first markets to offer autonomous vehicles as an option for people who use the ride-hailing service Lyft.

Lyft will partner with Ford and Pittsburgh-based autonomous driving company Argo AI on the venture, which is expected to debut in Miami this year and be followed by Austin in 2022.

New simulator helps robots sharpen their cutting skills -- ScienceDaily

Researchers from the University of Southern California (USC) Department of Computer Science and NVIDIA have unveiled a new simulator for robotic cutting that can accurately reproduce the forces acting on a knife as it slices through common foodstuffs, such as fruit and vegetables.

In the past, researchers have had trouble creating intelligent robots that replicate cutting. One challenge: in the real world, no two objects are the same, and current robotic cutting systems struggle with variation.
