Comets vs Asteroids | Space

From blazing a trail through the night sky to wiping out the dinosaurs, we've all heard of the chunks of rock or ice traversing our solar system. But what's the difference between comets and asteroids?

In our solar system 's asteroid belt there are millions of asteroids and at least 1.1 million large asteroids with a diameter of 1 kilometer (0.6 miles) or greater. However, asteroids are just one of many objects orbiting the sun.

Shards of the Planet Mercury May Be Hiding on Earth - The New York Times

Mercury does not make sense. It is a bizarre hunk of rock with a composition that is unlike its neighboring rocky planets.

Most of the planet, the closest to the sun, is taken up by its core. It lacks a thick mantle like Earth has, and no one is quite sure why. One possibility is that the planet used to be much bigger — perhaps twice its current bulk or more.

How to avoid 'bad actors' in booming solar industry - InForum | Fargo, Moorhead and West Fargo ...

ALBANY, Minn. -- Frank and Angela Haynes wanted to put solar panels on their century-old home in Albany, about 20 miles west of St. Cloud.

Frank Haynes worked for an electric utility years ago, when most electricity was produced by burning coal. He knew that solar is becoming an affordable energy alternative to reduce fossil fuel use, which produces greenhouse gasses that contribute to climate change.

Forget About Mars, When Will Humans be Flying to Saturn? - Universe Today

It might be hard to fathom now, but the human exploration of the solar system isn't going to stop at the Moon and Mars. Eventually, our descendants will spread throughout the solar system – for those interested in space exploration, the question is only of when rather than if.

How to even start such a calculation is complicated, so it's best to start at the basics, which in this case involves a bit of calculus. To understand when humans will reach further out in the solar system, the authors needed two variables – distance and time.

Florida Power & Light looking to boost solar battery storage sevenfold

At night or when there is thick cloud cover overhead, energy from the sun captured by the utility's nearby solar panel field can be stored for later use, further reducing the need to rely on fossil fuels and allowing excess renewable energy generated not to go to waste.

Much like a rooftop solar contractor might advise a homeowner to install a battery pack in tandem with their solar system, battery storage is becoming an integral piece of large-scale renewable energy investments.
