An interdisciplinary team of faculty researchers from CREOL, The College of Optics and Photonics, and UCF's physics department has won the opportunity to develop a system that uses photonics to more accurately visualize space debris — an increasing problem since the start of the space age.

New nanosatellite tests autonomy in space | MIT News | Massachusetts Institute of Technology

In May 2022, a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket launched the Transporter-5 mission into orbit. The mission contained a collection of micro and nanosatellites from both industry and government, including one from MIT Lincoln Laboratory called the Agile MicroSat (AMS).

AMS's primary mission is to test automated maneuvering capabilities in the tumultuous very low-Earth orbit (VLEO) environment, starting at 525 kilometers above the surface and lowering down.

China launches 14 satellites with new solid rocket from mobile sea platform - SpaceNews

HELSINKI — China launched its new Jielong-3 rocket from a mobile sea platform in the Yellow Sea Friday, successfully sending 14 satellites into orbit.

The Jielong-3 ("Smart Dragon-3") lifted off at 1:35 a.m. Eastern (0635 UTC) Dec. 9, from the Tai Rui modified barge off in the Yellow Sea.

BMW looks into satellite-based Internet service | Automotive News Europe

MUNICH, Germany — BMW Group could turn to space to ensure its connected vehicles stay online.

Customers expect a stable Internet connection at all times, Durach said at a media briefing here last month.

So-called nonterrestrial network technology offers the potential for seamless connectivity, and BMW is evaluating future applications and partnership possibilities.

The Department of Defense currently tracks more than 47,000 objects in space larger than 10 cm, including debris from anti-satellite missile tests, which can harm vital assets in orbit.

“Destructive anti-satellite missile tests create large amounts of space debris that threaten astronauts and satellites that provide vital services,” said Senator Feinstein.

Deep-space optical communication demonstratio | EurekAlert!

Researchers report new results from the NASA Deep Space Optical Communications (DSOC) technology demonstration project, which develops and tests new advanced laser sources for deep-space optical communication.

Validating deep space optical communications will allow streaming back high-definition imagery during robotic and manned exploration of planetary bodies, utilizing resources comparable to state-of-art radio-frequency telecommunications.

3 central Ohio projects receive approval for tax incentives

The project was one of 14 to be approved by the Ohio Tax Credit Authority. The projects are expected to create 1,663 jobs and retain 3,457 jobs statewide and result in $202.6 million in investments across the state.

The laboratory at Ohio State would be a replica of the Starlab space-station science park and would allow researchers to test missions.
