Other Solar System planets have their secrets too, and NASA has just funded a bunch of planetary mission concept studies to see what's feasible to explore in the near future.

These studies will be published in the 2023 Planetary Science Decadal Survey, a US National Research Council publication produced every 10 years or so, identifying key issues and outlining recommendations for the coming decade in planetary science.

Not all of the concept studies will be selected to be developed into full missions; and then, not all the selected missions will end up being fully developed! Young stars often have a disk of gas and dust swirling around them. Planets typically coalesce from this material, and eventually grow large enough to clear a path through these protoplanetary disks . Astrophysicist Richard Teague, who conducted the study at the University of Michigan, and his team examined new high-resolution data from the Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA), a radio observatory in Chile. In particular, they were able to observe the velocity of carbon monoxide gas moving within the protoplanetary disc around a young star called HD 163296. While hydrogen makes up the majority of the gas in the disk, carbon monoxide emits the brightest wavelengths, giving researchers the most detailed picture of how gas moves within the disk.

Another Pluto? What the discovery of a new dwarf planet means to astronomy | Salon.com

Ceres, Eris, Makemake, Haumea, and Pluto are expected to have a new friend, Hygiea, inducted into our solar system’s dwarf planet club. Hygiea was long believed to be a large asteroid in the asteroid belt, but has met all the requirements needed to become a dwarf planet thanks to new observations made by Chile’s Very Large Telescope (VLT).

The findings and new images that suggest Hygiea is actually a dwarf planet were published in Nature Astronomy by astronomer Pierre Vernazza of the Laboratoire d’Astrophysique de Marseille in France and his team of researchers.

“Thanks to the unique capability of the SPHERE instrument on the VLT , which is one of the most powerful imaging systems in the world, we could resolve Hygiea’s shape, which turns out to be nearly spherical,” Vernazza  said in a media statement . “Thanks to these images, Hygiea may be reclassified as a dwarf planet, so far the smallest in the Solar System.”

IDAHO FALLS — As the Idaho Falls Symphony's 70th Season Jubilee continues, they proudly join forces with the Idaho National Laboratory, which is also celebrating their 70th year in Idaho Falls. The two organizations will collaborate to offer educational displays related to INL's space batteries program and more during the upcoming concert performance of The Planets, the beloved orchestral suite by English composer Gustav Holst. The concert will take place in the newly renovated Civic Center for the Performing Arts on Saturday, Nov. 9, at 7:30 p.m.

The first half of the program will feature the spirited and comic tone poem Till Eulenspiegel's Merry Pranks by Richard Strauss. This will be the first performance of a Strauss tone poem in the orchestra's 70 year history–a major milestone. Strauss is notorious for using large orchestral forces in his music, notably in the tone poem Zarathustra, made famous in the opening credits of 2001: A Space Odyssey. Here Strauss uses the huge orchestra to describe the "merry pranks" of his protagonist, the German medieval character Till Eulenspiegel, as he gets into all kinds of mischief. Music Director Thomas Heuser will lead audiences "Inside the Score" during the concert, with the orchestra providing musical examples of the different characters and scenes in real-time as a prelude to the complete performance.

Hot Jupiters were the first kind of exoplanet found. A quarter-century later, they still perplex and captivate — and their origins hold lessons about planet formation in general.

In 1995, after years of effort, astronomers made an announcement: They'd found the first planet circling a sun-like star outside our solar system. But that planet, 51 Pegasi b, was in a quite unexpected place — it appeared to be just around 4.8 million miles away from its home star and able to dash around the star in just over four Earth-days. Our innermost planet, Mercury, by comparison, is 28.6 million miles away from the sun at its closest approach and orbits it every 88 days.

Second interstellar visitor may be carrying water from beyond our solar system, shocking study

A shocking new study suggests that the second interstellar object ever discovered, Comet 2I/Borisov, could be carrying water on it from beyond the Solar System.

The study suggests that 2I/Borisov, discovered on Aug. 30 by astronomer Gennady Borisov, is releasing water vapor on its journey.

"Using a simple sublimation model we estimate an H2O active area of 1.7 km2 [0.65 miles squared], which for current estimates for the size of Borisov suggests active fractions between 1-150 [percent], consistent with values measured in Solar System comets," the study's abstract states! For decades, scientists have pointed Earthly lenses toward the sky to capture images of the cosmos. Even the earliest rockets that launched off the planet brought cameras into space. 

At first, our photos of the solar system came back grainy, unclear, and colorless. The very first image taken in space, for example, came from a 33mm motion-picture camera that American scientists strapped to a captured German rocket and launched off Earth at the end of World War II. The camera fell back to Earth and shattered, but the film survived.

Other early solar-system images came as NASA and the Soviet Union explored the moon for the first time — people born in the 1950s and 60s grew up with the iconic photos of the first astronauts walking on the moon.

The comet is an alien intruder from another star system. But 2I/Borisov, the second known interstellar visitor after far smaller 'Oumuamua , discovered in 2017, looks remarkably like a normal comet from our own Solar System: an object a few kilometers across spewing carbon monoxide gas, water vapor, and dust. Researchers who announced their analysis this week say the size of the two objects, along with the rate of their discovery and other factors, suggests that at any given moment more than a dozen interstellar visitors at least as large as 'Oumuamua are passing through the Solar System.

NASA's Voyager Missions Were Amazing. Now Scientists Want a True Interstellar Probe | Space

WASHINGTON — Humanity should consider building an interstellar probe to see our neighborhood from an outside point of view, argued several scientists at a recent conference.

NASA's Voyager 1 and 2 spacecraft are the only machines that people have sent beyond our solar system. These 42-year-old spacecraft are still functioning well enough to send us information from interstellar space, and many of their insights have been surprising, according to Stamatios (Tom) Krimigis, the principal investigator of the low-energy charged particle experiment that is still working on both spacecraft.

"The models have been wrong," Krimigis told delegates on Oct. 25 at the International Astronautical Congress held here. One prominent example was the shape of the heliosphere, or the region of space in which the stream of charged particles emanates from our sun and wraps around the solar system! The other poster focuses on Poltergeist, Draugr and Phobetor, three planets that orbit the pulsar PSR B1257+12, which lies about 2,000 light-years from Earth. Pulsars are fast-spinning stellar corpses that emit beams of radiation from their poles; these beams appear to pulse because of the rotation, which gives pulsars their name.

A NASA report finds planetary contamination rules may be too strict | Science News

Some policies for protecting the moon, Mars and other places in the solar system from contamination by visiting missions may be too strict.

At least one astrobiologist cautioned, however, against relaxing current guidelines too much. Spacecraft landing in areas deemed sterile could still contaminate areas that are potentially interesting for astrobiology, says John Rummel of the SETI Institute in Mountain View, Calif. If a lunar probe crashes on the moon's surface, "you end up with material that's taken into the lunar atmosphere and deposited in the cold traps at the south and north anyway," he says. "You don't even have to land at the south pole to affect [it]."

Astrobiologist Alberto Fairén of Cornell University welcomes the possibility of adding nuance to the "extremely restrictive" protection guidelines for Mars. He and colleagues recommended a few high-priority astrobiology zones in Advances in Space Research in March, including lakes of liquid water possibly hidden under ice sheets ( SN: 12/17/18 ).

NASA teams up with major alien hunting group as they up the search for extraterrestrials |

By analysing data from TESS scientists will be able to determine which distant planets they should focus on in the search for extraterrestrial intelligence (SETI).

The space telescope uses an array of wide-field cameras to perform a survey of 85 percent of the sky.

TESS is capable of studying the mass, size, density and orbit of a large cohort of small planets, including a sample of rocky planets in the habitable zones of their host stars.

The satellite works by searching for telltale brightness dips potentially indicating planetary “transits” — the passages of orbiting worlds across their parent stars’ faces.

Around 13,000 years ago, giant animals such as mastodons, mammoths, saber-toothed cats and ground sloths disappeared from the Earth. Scientists have found evidence in sediment cores to support a controversial theory that an asteroid or a comet slammed into Earth and helped lead to this extinction of ice age animals and cooling of the globe.

It’s called the Younger Dryas Impact Hypothesis and was first suggested in 2007. The hypothesis included the idea that an extraterrestrial body impacted Earth 12,800 years ago. This led to an extreme cooling of the environment, which in turn helped cause more than 35 species of large animals to go extinct.

At the same time, human populations declined. The impact also has been suggested as the cause of large, raging wildfires that created enough smoke to block the sun and created an “impact winter,” in which cold weather lasts longer than expected after Earth is impacted.

Another Pluto? What the discovery of a new dwarf planet means to astronomy | Salon.com

Ceres, Eris, Makemake, Haumea, and Pluto are expected to have a new friend, Hygiea, inducted into our solar system’s dwarf planet club. Hygiea was long believed to be a large asteroid in the asteroid belt, but has met all the requirements needed to become a dwarf planet thanks to new observations made by Chile’s Very Large Telescope (VLT).

The findings and new images that suggest Hygiea is actually a dwarf planet were published in Nature Astronomy by astronomer Pierre Vernazza of the Laboratoire d’Astrophysique de Marseille in France and his team of researchers.

“Thanks to the unique capability of the SPHERE instrument on the VLT , which is one of the most powerful imaging systems in the world, we could resolve Hygiea’s shape, which turns out to be nearly spherical,” Vernazza  said in a media statement . “Thanks to these images, Hygiea may be reclassified as a dwarf planet, so far the smallest in the Solar System.”

"A giant planet is not as easily scattered into an eccentric orbit as a smaller planet, but if there are multiple giant planets close to the host star, their gravitational interactions are more likely scatter them into eccentric orbits," explained first author Renata Frelikh, a graduate student in astronomy and astrophysics at UC Santa Cruz.

Frelikh performed hundreds of simulations of planetary systems, starting each one with 10 planets in circular orbits and varying the initial total mass of the system and the masses of individual planets! Mysterious secret American 'space plane' lands after orbiting for more than two years

A mysterious robotic 'space plane' stayed in orbit for 780 days - more than two years - before finally landing on Sunday.

The  unmanned space plane  touched down at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida on Sunday.

The Boeing X-37B craft - also known as Orbital Test Vehicle 4 - was on a classified mission, testing new technologies.

Observers have speculated that the Space Shuttle-esque vehicle might be designed to destroy satellites, or spy on other countries.

The X37-B first went into space in 2010 and has completed five missions. The craft can carry cargo loads into space and return them to engineers on Earth.

The Air Force has said it performs "risk reduction, experimentation, and concept of operations development for reusable space vehicle technologies".

One half of the award went to James Peebles at Princeton University for theoretical discoveries in physical cosmology, and the other half was jointly awarded to Michel Mayor at the University of Geneva and Didier Queloz at the universities of Geneva and Cambridge for their discovery of an exoplanet orbiting a solar-type star.

Peebles' research over two decades has formed the basis for our understanding of the universe's history after the big bang. He made theoretical predictions about the shape of the universe and the matter and energy that it contains. These were later validated by measurements of background radiation.

Astrocast Signs Launch Agreement With D-Orbit - Via Satellite -

Astrocast and D-Orbit signed an agreement for the launch and deployment of ten Astrocast nanosatellites into Low Earth Orbit (LEO), through D-Orbit 's InOrbit Now Launch Service. The agreement calls for the Astrocast nanosatellites to be launched onboard an Arianespace Vega or Vega C vehicle from Kourou, French Guiana, in the first quarter of 2022.

This batch of nanosatellites will make up the Astrocast Internet of Things (IoT) Nanonsatellite Network's equatorial plane. The Astrocast constellation will consist of eight orbital planes, each consisting of eight operational and two spare satellites. Astrocast's constellation is expected to serve the maritime, oil and gas, mining, supply chain and logistics, automotive, and utilities sectors.

"We are honored to contribute to the expansion of Astrocast's infrastructure in low inclination orbits" commented Renato Panesi, D-Orbit COO. "This contract expands previous agreements with Astrocast and strengthens the cooperation between the two companies. By analysing data from TESS scientists will be able to determine which distant planets they should focus on in the search for extraterrestrial intelligence (SETI).

The space telescope uses an array of wide-field cameras to perform a survey of 85 percent of the sky.

TESS is capable of studying the mass, size, density and orbit of a large cohort of small planets, including a sample of rocky planets in the habitable zones of their host stars.

The satellite works by searching for telltale brightness dips potentially indicating planetary “transits” — the passages of orbiting worlds across their parent stars’ faces.

This, in turn, means that your cloud of platforms should softly glow. A distant observer training a telescope on your solar system might see something like a hot, opaque screen encircling a dimmed star—a spherical entity, curiously bright at certain wavelengths.

The theoretical physicist Freeman Dyson first speculated about the existence of such structures in 1960. In the decades since, astronomers on Earth have looked repeatedly for so-called Dyson spheres, and nobody has seen one. There are different ways of interpreting this result! Near-Earth objects provide extraterrestrial intelligence an ‘ideal’ way to spy on

Although Earth only has one moon, it does have other natural satellites, including asteroid 2016 HO3, known as a “co-orbital object.” These tiny celestial objects could be an “attractive location for extraterrestrial intelligence,” according to a new study.

The research suggests that these space rocks could be hiding grounds for an advanced civilization, given their small size and close proximity to the planet.

A technology that has enabled ever-faster delivery of voice and data over the Internet and other telecommunications platforms could play a front-and-center role in NASA’s quest to develop a super-small instrument for gathering unprecedented details about extraterrestrial planets, moons, comets, and asteroids.

As good as MILAHI is, it’s too big and heavy to fly on a traditional satellite, let alone a less-expensive CubeSat whose small size and lower cost would allow scientists to fly multiple, similarly equipped platforms for multipoint observations, said Principal Investigator Tony Yu, a technologist at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, who recently won technology-development funds from NASA’s Planetary Concepts for the Advancement of Solar System Observations (PICASSO) program to mature a smaller MILAHI-type instrument.

Sometimes the introduction of a news report will stop you in your tracks, forcing you to reread in fear you didn't quite grasp its point the first time. That was certainly the case when Mail Online published a story on Mar. 21, 2017: "An alien satellite set up more than 12,000 years ago to spy on humans has been shot down by elite soldiers from the illuminati, UFO hunters claim." 

There, for all to see, were images released by NASA that showed a black object hovering above the Earth in low orbit. And it wasn't long after the images were thrust in front of a hopeful public before people were performing some conspiratorial sums and sharing them with the wider world.

By way of explanation, astronaut Jerry Ross pointed out that the ISS was in the midst of being constructed when the images were taken. The U.S. team, he said, was on its way to attach the American module to the one created by the Russians and, as part of that work, they had taken four trunnion pin thermal covers with them. The task was to wrap these around four bare trunnion pins, these being rods that attached the module to the shuttle while it was being transported. This would act to prevent heat loss from the exposed metal.
