Sound mimics gravity in experiment that simulates convection in stars and planets – Physics ...

Sound waves have been used in the lab to mimic the role that gravity plays in driving convection in huge rotating bodies such as stars and planets.

Convection within rotating planets and stars plays an important role in the internal dynamics of these huge objects. Here on Earth, for example, convection in the outer core is believed to create our planet's magnetic field and convection in the atmosphere drives weather patterns.

NASA warns of 3 skyscraper-sized asteroids headed toward Earth this week.

Our solar system is home to millions of renegade space rocks, and this week three particularly large ones will blaze past Earth.

On Monday (Feb. 27), an asteroid named 2012 DK31 will sail past our planet at a distance of about 3 million miles (4.8 million km).

Although the space rock poses no imminent threat to Earth, NASA classifies it as a potentially hazardous asteroid (PHA) – meaning the rock is large enough and orbits close enough to Earth that it could cause serious damage if its trajectory changed and a collision occurred.

Two skyscraper-sized asteroids headed in Earth's direction this week

The closest of the three asteroids will miss Earth by roughly 2.2 million miles (3.5 million kilometers), which is about ten times the distance between the Earth and the moon, according to NASA .

That's a relatively small distance when it comes to space, meaning the space agency is using the close flyby to collect data and help prepare for any future close approaches.

Are We Finally on the Cusp of Commercial Asteroid Mining?

Years after initial space-mining ventures went bust, startup AstroForge has announced two missions in 2023 to obtain rare-earth minerals from a near-Earth asteroid.

Asteroid mining is back in the news. In January, California-based startup AstroForge announced that in 2023 it will lay the foundations to become the first commercial company to mine an asteroid and bring the materials back to Earth.

The Space Review: Assessing NASA advisory activities: What makes advice effective

NASA inherited a culture of inviting outside advice from its predecessor, the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA), and that culture has persisted to this day.

In nearly all the case-study examples, their degree of success has depended on four factors that characterize the advice and the advisory process (see diagram):

If Planet Nine has a moon, will it help us find it?

What if Planet Nine had satellites? Can it help us find Planet Nine more easily? The new paper speculates that any moons orbiting Planet Nine could provide indirect clues to Planet Nine’s location, while revealing fundamental properties of the enigmatic object.

Chen Wenhao of the Education University of Hong Kong said that the research shows the possibility that Planet Nine captures a large trans-Neptunian object (TNO) to form a satellite system. We use a benchmark analysis model, and the tidal effect of Planet Nine can significantly heat the satellite.

Robots Could Be Doing Almost Half of Our Household Chores Within a Decade

There are growing fears around the impact automation could have on jobs , but there's been much less focus on how it could impact unpaid labor. New research suggests close to half of the time-consuming domestic work people do for free could be automated within a decade.

While there's been considerable debate about the scale of the problem, it is now widely accepted that emerging technologies could dramatically reshape the world of work in ways unseen since the industrial revolution.

Origami Robots: How Technology Moves at the Micro Level - Research Blog

Imagine a robot small enough to rest on a U.S. penny. Or even small enough to rest on Lincoln’s chest. It sounds preposterous enough.

Before it was changed to a Union Shield, the tail side of pennies contained the Lincoln Memorial, including a miniscule representation of the seated Lincoln statue that rests inside. Barely visible to the naked eye, this miniature Lincoln is on the order of a few hundred micrometers wide.

See Jupiter And Venus ‘Kiss’ After Sunset As The Planets Align: The Night Sky This Week

This week the night sky is home to a rare apparent celestial "kiss" between the giant planet Jupiter and super-bright Venus. The two brightest planets of all will tangle in the post-sunset western sky this week, gradually getting closer before an apparent closest pass on Wednesday.

The week's conjunction begins in earnest tonight after sunset in the west. This image—and all images below for subsequent evenings—shows your last chance on that day to see the conjunction, around an hour after sunset.

The brightest planets coming together: How to spot Venus & Jupiter

All month long, the two brightest planets in the sky, Jupiter and Venus, have been hanging out every evening in the western sky. The two planets have continued to get closer to each other over the last few weeks, culminating in a close conjunction on March 1 (see below).

You can also see Mars high in the southern, Southwestern sky after sunset. On Monday, Mars and the Moon will appear less than a degree apart, however it will be way too cloudy to see that pairing in Northeast Ohio.

Locate planets via clock-face visualization | MyRGV.com

I s anyone interested in the star lore of the first people in our hemisphere? There are some wonderful tales related to astronomy across all the cultures of the world. Access to internet sites has provided some beautiful interpretations of star groups and their stories.

It has been a while since we tried the clock-face location of the visible planets. I hope you have taken advantage of clear nights to walk out and look up and scribe the arc of Mars near the zenith and across towards the west to see Venus and Jupiter.
