Jupiter may be the undisputed king of the planets in the solar system, but its record of 79 moons has just been smashed after the announcement of a stunning 20 new outer moons at Saturn.

Previously thought to have 62 moons, the discovery puts the ringed planet's new total at a peerless 82 moons.

Announced Monday by the International Astronomical Union's Minor Planet Center, all 20 are outer moons about three miles/five kilometers in diameter.

And that's a boon for observers: If two planets have the same mass but one has a magma ocean and the other doesn't, it could be about 5% larger across, making it easier to spot. Most Extreme 'Hot Jupiter' Alien Planet Completes 1 Orbit Every 18 Hours | Space

Giant alien worlds known as hot Jupiters get scorchingly close to their host stars, and now astronomers have discovered the most extreme version of such planets to date — one that zips around its star in a little more than 18 hours, a new study finds.

This exoplanet's orbit is likely decaying enough for scientists to actually measure it over the coming decade, researchers added.

What moons in other solar systems reveal about planets like Neptune and Jupiter

What is the difference between a planet-satellite system as we have with the Earth and Moon, versus a binary planet – two planets orbiting each other in a cosmic do-si-do?

In 2018, two astronomers from Columbia University reported the first tentative observation of an exomoon – a satellite orbiting a planet that itself orbits another star. One curious feature was that this exomoon Kepler-1625b-i was much more massive than any moon found in our solar system. It has a mass similar to Neptune and orbits a planet similar in size to Jupiter.

Astronomers expect moons of planets like Jupiter and Saturn to have masses only a few percent of Earth. But this new exomoon was almost a thousand times larger than the corresponding bodies of our solar system – moons like Ganymede and Titan which orbit Jupiter and Saturn, respectively. It is very difficult to explain the formation of such a large satellite using current models of moon formation.

Humans will not 'migrate' to other planets, Nobel winner says

"If we are talking about exoplanets, things should be clear: we will not migrate there," Mayor told AFP near Madrid on the sidelines of a conference when asked about the possibility of humans moving to other planets.

"These planets are much, much too far away. Even in the very optimistic case of a livable planet that is not too far, say a few dozen light years, which is not a lot, it's in the neighbourhood, the time to go there is considerable," he added.

Using custom-made instruments at their observatory in southern France, Mayor and Queloz in October 1995 discovered what had previously only existed in the realm of science fiction—a planet outside Earth's solar system.

Mayor was a professor at Geneva University and Queloz was his doctorate student, when they made the discovery which started a revolution in astronomy. Since then over 4,000 exoplanets have been found in our home galaxy.

Stars that eat planets can start spinning so fast they rip apart | New Scientist

Stars sometimes bite off more than they can chew. When a star devours a planet, it can have strange effects on the star, including causing it to start falling apart. Understanding those effects could help us figure out how different kinds of planetary systems are formed.

Many planets across the universe probably end up falling into their stars, either because they stray too close, or because the stars expand as they age. We have seen some evidence of this, like clouds of leftover debris and stars full of elements they couldn't maintain on their own.

Alexander Stephan at the University of California, Los Angeles, and his colleagues calculated how planets could affect the stars that eat them. They found that a planet falling into a star can make the star brighten for anything from centuries to millennia. And that the star can spin faster as the planet deposits its energy.
