The End of Handshakes—for Humans and for Robots | WIRED

Elenoide the android was made to shake your hand. She looks like a Madame Tussad's rendition of a prim fifth-grade teacher. She's dressed in a salmon cardigan with scalloped edges, a knee-length striped skirt, and a wig made of ashy blonde human hair. Her hands are warmed by heating pads hidden beneath the palms. During experiments, she wears white butler gloves.

Handshakes are not valued equally among all the social and cultural groups that practice them. According to Yuta Katsumi, a cognitive neuroscientist who currently researches memory but has conducted several studies on people's evaluation of handshakes, everyone he studied appreciated a handshake. They were taken as a sign of goodwill and trustworthiness and business competence.

Robots patrol Singapore parks and streets to enforce social distancing

Developed by local technology company Otsaw , the fully autonomous, four-wheeled O-R3 robot is being used in a number of the city's parks, and comes equipped with sensors and wraparound cameras that record and send data to the authorities in real time, although a government spokesman has said the robot would not be used for enforcement.

“The robot patrols the reservoir and broadcasts messages in four languages, reminding visitors to refrain from gathering or loitering at the reservoir parks and to adhere to safe-distancing requirements."

Increasing throughput for robots would help Amazon's efforts to increase the overall throughput for its fulfillment and sort centers. If robots hit more goal locations in a warehouse, items can move throughout a location faster. The paper doesn't define "goal location," but Amazon uses drive units in the picking process and in sorting centers, so it could be a move to a picker or a move to a chute where a package needs to be deposited.

Existing MAPF techniques take approaches that include replanning paths every time a defined period of time elapses or replanning only if an agent has a new goal location. But it can take a lot of computing power to plan an entire collision-free route for dozens of robots, so the researchers suggest just avoiding collisions over a certain time span and not the entire trip.

While receiving a cup of coffee from a Starship Technologies delivery robot at Bowling Green State University, U.S. Rep. Bob Latta, R-Bowling Green, introduced his new bill, the Advancing Unmanned Delivery Services Act.

There are currently 30 of the six-wheeled little delivery robots in use at BGSU. The delivery robot program was introduced at the university about two weeks before the coronavirus mandates that required the university to switch to entirely online courses.
