A space rock possibly as wide as a football field flew between the moon and Earth last week, but the big asteroid -- catalogued as 2021 SG -- wasn't spotted until the day after it had already made its closest pass by our planet.
That meteor was estimated to be only about one quarter the diameter of 2021 SG, and yet that was large enough to create a shock wave that blew out thousands of windows in the city below, injuring hundreds.
A huge asteroid almost hit earth but NASA didn't detect it until a day later | Esquire Middle East
A giant asteroid almost hit earth on September 16, but because it came from the direction of the sun, scientists missed it
If you heard a whooshing noise recently, you weren't imagining it—there was indeed a gigantic asteroid that almost hit earth this month. And NASA didn't see it coming.
Asteroid about 3 times size of Statue of Liberty to pass Earth on 1st day of fall | WJMN -
( WJW ) – A large asteroid will reportedly zip past Earth on Wednesday afternoon during the autumnal equinox , which ushers in the fall season.
The asteroid, known as "2021 NY1," is being tracked by NASA's Center for Near-Earth Object Studies (CNEOS). NASA says it knows about the “vast majority” of larger asteroids and none pose a threat, though the space agency says it’s “always on the lookout.”
Amateur astronomers capture flash from asteroid impacting Jupiter – Physics World
Five amateur astronomers from South America and Europe have captured a burst of light on Jupiter that was the result of an asteroid crashing into the planet's atmosphere.
José Luis Pereira from Brazil is among those to image the impact. On the evening of the 13 September he was recording videos of the planet with a 275 mm-aperture Newtonian telescope when he spotted a "glow" in one of the captures.
Massive Asteroid Flew By Earth Before Scientists Even Saw It
Some days, scientists find asteroids months before they're expected to pass by our planet. Other days, those same crews may not notice a warehouse-sized asteroid zoomed by Earth until...well, it already zoomed by.
According to data released by the NASA-backed Minor Planet Center , 2021 SG has a diameter of anywhere between 42 meters and 94 meters. For non-scientists, that's roughly 138 feet to 308 feet.
Asteroid fragments to be studied using specialized X-ray techniques
A team of Argonne scientists is among the few groups around the world chosen to study tiny fragments of an asteroid. These dust particles came from 162173 Ryugu, part of a group of near-Earth objects called the Apollo asteroids.
These bits of rock are remarkably tiny—each is about 200 microns in diameter, about the size of three human hairs. But they carry with them information about how these asteroids were formed, and may tell us long-hidden secrets about the early days of the solar system, including Earth itself.
An Asteroid Annihilated a City 3,600 Years Ago. It Could Happen Again.
As the inhabitants of an ancient Middle Eastern city now called Tall el-Hammam went about their daily business one day about 3,600 years ago, they had no idea an unseen icy space rock was speeding toward them at about 38,000 mph (61,000 kph).
Flashing through the atmosphere, the rock exploded in a massive fireball about 2.5 miles (4 kilometers) above the ground. The blast was around 1,000 times more powerful than the Hiroshima atomic bomb. The shocked city dwellers who stared at it were blinded instantly.
