The other is active. We send out probes to distant planets and moons and scan even farther-away heavenly bodies with powerful telescopes that can help us to determine the makeup of a planet's atmosphere.
Looking past the Red Planet, the European Space Agency and NASA are both planning to launch space telescopes that could scan the atmospheres of "exo-planets" potentially hundreds of trillions of miles from Earth.
NASA's new James Webb telescope, billed by the agency as the " world's premier space science observatory," should be ready by 2021. The ESA's Remote-Sensing Infrared Exoplanet Large-Survey telescope is slated for a 2028 launch.

COLUMN: Invasion of the 'Ear Bud Snatchers'
The first sign of the infestation is when you try to talk with the person and you hear them respond with "huh" or "what" or "do what" or "what did you say." This occurs simultaneously with them reaching up and pawing at their ear or ears. On closer examination, you can see the alien has attached itself to the person's ears and in some cases, you can see the alien's tentacles coming from the ear and leading down and leaching onto the person's cell phone.
It reminds me a lot of the aliens featured in the 1956 classic science fiction film, "Invasion of the Body Snatchers." For those of you unfamiliar with the film it's about an extraterrestrial invasion during which alien plant spores fall from space and grow into large seed pods, each one capable of reproducing a duplicate replacement copy of each human.

Letter | The extraterrestrial threat is here – Santa Cruz Sentinel
Last September while addressing the United Nations General Assembly, President Trump said, "The future belongs to patriots." That's a swell sounding slogan, suggesting that everybody should prioritize their love of their own country above all else. Good old nationalism.
We used to joke that the only thing that would get everyone on the planet to come together for a common cause would be an attack from Mars or some other extraterrestrial threat.
Well guess what.

The Sentinel welcomes your letters to the editor. Letters should be short, no more than 150 words. We do not accept anonymous letters. Letter-writers should include their full name as well as a street address and telephone number. We don’t publish those details in the newspaper, but need the information for verification purposes. Occasionally, we reject letters simply because we’ve had so many on the same subject.
Donald Trump's reign is hindering alien disclosure, says extraterrestrial researcher
Conspiracy theorists all across the world strongly believe that advanced aliens from deep space have been visiting the earth for hundreds of thousands of years. In order to substantiate these claims, they put forward the ancient cave paintings that show 'star men' and flying saucers.
Now, Stephen Bassett, a self-proclaimed extraterrestrial researcher who set up the Paradigm Group to unveil alien mysteries has claimed that Donald Trump's presidential election win has hindered the process of alien disclosure.
Navy says release of files into UFO sightings would 'damage' security - Business Insider
A Navy representative responded to a Freedom of Information Act request sent by a researcher named Christian Lambright by saying the Navy had "discovered certain briefing slides that are classified TOP SECRET," Vice reported last week .
* * *
Lambright's request for information was related to a series of videos showing Navy pilots baffled by mysterious, fast objects in the sky.
The term UFO, along with others like "unidentified aerial phenomena" and "unidentified flying object," does not necessarily mean the object is thought to be extraterrestrial. Many such sightings ultimately end up having logical and earthly explanations — often involving military technology.
