Astronomers using NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory have observed a pair of relativistic jets blasting away from a black hole in the binary system MAXI J1820+070.

MAXI J1820+070 , also known as ASASSN-18ey, is a binary system located about 10,000 light-years away in the constellation of Ophiuchus.

Magnetic fields force new perspective on Milky Way's black hole

Using its newest infrared instrument to study celestial dust grains, which align perpendicular to magnetic field lines, SOFIA was able to produce detailed maps of our galactic center, showing the behavior of these otherwise invisible magnetic fields around the black hole.

"There are still aspects of our galaxy's black hole that we can't explain with gravity alone," said Joan Schmelz, director at the Universities Space Research Association, in Columbia, MD, and SOFIA senior science advisor. "Magnetic fields may be able to help solve these mysteries."

I know what you might be thinking. Some version of "I thought nothing could escape a black hole?" You're right, nothing can. But this material isn't actually coming out of the black hole. It's coming from the material circling around the black hole and being heated by that motion.

Watch two jets burst from a black hole at 80% the speed of light

At the center of galaxies, massive black holes lurk in the shadows and, usually, they swallow up material that dares to come near. However that's not always the case, new images captured by astronomers show what happens when a black hole acts as a gas fountain.

Galactic star formation and supermassive black hole masses

The astronomers find that galaxies in the local universe with more than about ten billion masses of stars will indeed tend to quench star production once the energy in the winds from black hole accretion becomes larger than the gravitational energy in the gas, and that this tends to happen when the mass of the supermassive black hole exceeds about one hundred and sixty million solar masses.

Australian universities facing $16bn black hole as Covid-19 student numbers plummet | Australia
