SpaceX delivers South Korea’s first military satellite into on-target orbit –

A SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket deployed South Korea’s first dedicated military satellite into orbit Monday a half-hour after a fiery launch from Cape Canaveral, helping fulfill an agreement between Lockheed Martin and the South Korean government in exchange for Korea’s purchase of F-35 fighter jets six years ago.

South Korea’s Anasis 2 military communications satellite rocketed away from Cape Canaveral at 5:30 p.m. EDT (2130 GMT) Monday on top of a Falcon 9 launcher. Nine Merlin main engines on the Falcon 9 rocket propelled the 229-foot-tall (70-meter) launcher off the ground, and the Falcon 9 turned east over the Atlantic Ocean, exceeding the speed of sound within about one minute.

NASA Space Station On-Orbit Status 16 July, 2020 - Spacewalk Completed - SpaceRef

NASA astronauts Chris Cassidy and Robert Behnken concluded their spacewalk at 1:10 p.m. EDT, after six hours.

The two NASA astronauts completed all the work to replace batteries that provide power for the station's solar arrays on the starboard truss of the complex. The new batteries provide an improved and more efficient power capacity for operations.

The spacewalkers removed six aging nickel-hydrogen batteries for the second of two power channels for the starboard 6 (S6) truss, installed three new lithium-ion batteries, and installed the three associated adapter plates that are used to complete the power circuit to the new batteries. Mission control reports that all three new batteries are working.

The phrase orbital mechanics —like nuclear particle physics or the theory of relativity —is something that makes many people’s eyes glaze over. The average person thinks that subjects like these are far too complex to understand. But if you strip away all the math and simply try to understand what is going on, they are actually not that hard to grasp.

If you take a baseball and throw it straight away from yourself, it will eventually hit the dirt—it runs out of speed, and then gravity pulls it to the earth. If you’re a major league pitcher, your throw will probably go farther than mine because it launches off your hand faster. But gravity eventually does its thing, and the ball will come down to the earth.

UNSW scientists up coherence time of a spin-orbit quantum computing qubit in silicon | ZDNet

A team led by scientists from the University of New South Wales (UNSW) has announced "significantly" increasing the coherence time of a spin-orbit quantum bit (qubit) in silicon, allowing them to preserve quantum information for longer.

The ARC Centre of Excellence for Quantum Computation and Communication Technology (CQC2T), based out of UNSW, said the results open up a new pathway to make silicon quantum computers more scalable and functional.

"Spin-orbit qubits have been investigated for over a decade as an option to scale up the number of qubits in a quantum computer, as they are easy to manipulate and couple over long distances. However, they have always shown very limited coherence times, far too short for quantum technologies," a release from CQC2T explained.
